You may have gotten an e-mail from achievement@uakron.edu with the subject, “Don't miss out on any of YOUR NAME’s accomplishments at The University of Akron!” The University of Akron

This message is not spam. UA participates in a program called Merit which allows the University to publicly recognize you with badges, or achievements, for the awesome things you accomplish while at UA, like making Dean’s List, internship and co-ops, community service, etc. At the same time, we also let your home newspaper know so they can publish it. It’s a great way to build a positive online presence.

SS&G Business Speaker Series Sept. 26
1:45 pm - 3:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron College of Business Administration will host the SS&G Business Speaker Series on September 26, 2013 in the Student Union Theatre, 1:45-3:00 PM. Graciously supported by SS&G, Inc., one of the nation's largest independent accounting and business consulting firms, the lecture is free and open to the University community.

The keynote speaker will be Robert J. Shearer, co-founder, former chairman and chief executive officer of Shearer's Foods, Inc., the manufacturer/distributor of Shearer's award-winning snacks. Shearer's presentation is titled, "Growing a business from the early days to a multi-million dollar entity."

Shearer began his career early in the family-owned grocery store and continued working through college, where he earned a bachelor's degree in finance from Walsh University in 1974. When the family decided to buy a potato chip distribution business that same year, Shearer sold and delivered products to customers. For 38 years, Shearer led the rapid growth of the Massillon, Ohio-based Shearer Foods. During his tenure, the company grew from a $4 million business with a handful of associates to a multi-million dollar business with more than 1,850 associates.

Shearer’s Foods has won numerous recognitions and awards. Shearer, inducted into the Northeast Ohio Business Hall of Fame and named Distinguished Citizen of the Western Reserve, is a recipient of numerous entrepreneurial awards.

Polish Ethnographic Film to be screened at UA

Filmmaker presents extraordinary cinematic document of the death of a culture

Akron, OH—The Active Research Methods Lab (ARM), Akron Story Circle Project (ASCP), Center for Conflict Management (CCM), and Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture (CATAC) present a single screening of the ethnographic documentary “The Song is Over” directed by Polish filmmaker and theatre artist Piotr Borowski on Friday, September 27 at 12 noon in Guzzetta Hall, Studio 194, on The University of Akron campus. Admission is free and open to all UA students and the general public. Film students, anthropology students, music and theatre students, and anyone interested in storytelling and cultural studies are urged to attend this special event. A discussion with the filmmaker will follow the screening.

In the winter of 1980/81 Piotr Borowski set off with three actor friends on what they called “Winter Expedition.” For three months they toured a performance in the Bialystok region of north-eastern Poland. They walked from village to village, pulling a sled loaded with their belongings. They reached remote hamlets where they met people of different nationalities and creeds. These people, to show their gratitude to the actors, sang for them their songs and Borowski recorded the singing on tapes. In 2007, Borowski returned to the region in order to give the recordings back or to hand them over to the families of those who had already passed away. “The Song is Over” is the filmed document of this return. It is a truly remarkable and startling depiction of the death of a certain cultural layer. Where once the houses were full of song, there is now silence.

Piotr Borowski is the director of Studium Teatralne, a Polish theatre company from Warsaw. Their performance “The King of Hearts is Off Again” will be presented at The Balch Street Theatre, September 26-28 at 8pm and September 29 at 2pm. For information call 330-867-3299 or www.nwplab.com

HELP ‘GREEN’ GAME DAY BY RECYCLING Sept. 21

spacer image
spacer image
Zips Football Fans help reduce waste and promote a cleaner and greener stadium by recycling on Game Day.

Labeled recycling and compost containers are located throughout Infocision Stadium. Colored liners help to further distinguish recycle and compost containers from garbage cans, which have ordinary black trash liners. Barrels lined with clear liners accept recyclables. Those barrels with green liners accept food scraps, paper-products, and other compostables.

Game Day Recycling Ambassadors will be on-hand to help Zips Fans recycle and to answer any questions.

This sustainability initiative is supported by the Department of Physical Facilities, Kappa Sigma, and the Department of Athletics.

UA seeks smokers' cooperation Aug. 30
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To comply with Ohio's Smoke-Free Workplace Law, UA forbids smoking in any enclosed area, including buildings, parking decks and University vehicles.

To comply with the requirements of this law and to help ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter any area in which smoking is prohibited, no smoking is permitted within 25 feet of an entranceway, window or ventilation system of any University building or enclosed area.

The law also requires that the University remove cigarette receptacles from areas on campus where smoking is prohibited. That means that smokers will have to fully extinguish their cigarettes when done and then place them in receptacles that are located at least 25 feet from the entrance of University buildings.

The University is asking all smokers to be mindful of the restrictions in and around buildings, to be cautious and courteous when discarding cigarettes and to refrain from removing cigarette receptacles from their intended locations.

More information is available on the Ohio Department of Health's Web site.
