New parking-fine schedule in effect Tuesday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A new parking-fine schedule designed to reduce the number of people who park in University lots but avoid paying for parking permits will go into effect Tuesday, Jan. 18. Under the old system, some drivers were taking their chances that paying tickets for a semester would cost less than buying a permit.

Starting Tuesday, most parking violations will cost $25, up from $10. Each subsequent violation will cost $5 more, to a maximum of $35. The cost of permits is not changing.

“Most of our students and employees pay for parking, and they should not need to compete for a space with someone who has not bought a permit,” said Jim Stafford, director of parking services. “It is a question of fairness.”

To view the new fine schedule, visit this page on Parking Services' Web site.

“Our goal is not to increase parking-fine revenue, but to protect those people who pay for permits,” Stafford said. “The new fines will affect only those who are trying to skirt the system.”

A survey of 30 universities nationwide by Parking Services revealed that Akron's $25 fine for violations places UA in the middle of the pack. Funds raised by permits and fines are used solely by Parking Services to maintain, clean and monitor parking areas, and to pay off bonds issued to construct decks and lots.

The English Language Institute (ELI), UA's English program for international students, invites UA students to participate in its Conversation Partners Program. Through this program, the ELI pairs an international student who is learning English in our program with an American partner for one hour of informal conversation per week. ELI students come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of educational, political, cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds. This program is a wonderful opportunity to learn about another country and culture and to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron.

Sign-up for the Spring 2005 Conversation Partners Program begins Tuesday, January 18 in the ELI Office in Olin Hall, Room 302. The one-hour weekly meetings will run from the week of February 14 through April 29 (10 weeks). There are no meetings during spring break. Call (330) 972-7544 for more information.
