¿Hablas español? New Spanish courses are career-specific Jan. 13
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Are you planning on a career in health care, or in law enforcement?

The Department of Modern Languages has developed Spanish language courses to help students preparing for careers in these fields communicate effectively with the growing numbers of Spanish-speaking people live in the United States. The courses are designed to give you an extensive vocabulary related to your discipline and broaden your cultural awareness.

In the spring, Spanish Conversation for Healthcare Professionals and First Responders (Spanish 3580-301-002), taught by Associate Professor Parizad Dejbord, and Spanish 380-301 003 and 004, taught by Instructor Amanda Ritchie, will be offered. Spanish 380-301:002 and 003 will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:15 to 3:05 p.m., and 004 will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:50 to 9:40 a.m., beginning Jan. 13.

The prerequisite for this class is Spanish 202 or equivalent. These classes were developed by faculty in the Department of Modern Languages. In addition to vocabulary and grammar, class time includes role-playing activities and simulations so that students learn to communicate easily with Spanish-speaking patients. Coursework will include a special focus on learning about health in the Spanish-speaking world and the different medical practices in the urban and rural areas of Latin America and Spain.

Spanish 101: Spanish for Law Enforcement (3580-101section 008), will be offered for the first time this spring for students majoring in sociology/criminology and law enforcement, or political science/criminal justice, as well as professionals working in these fields. Students will have opportunities throughout the semester to utilize their Spanish language skills in “real-world simulations.” This pilot class has been created at the beginning level, for students without previous Spanish study.

The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 to 3:55 p.m., beginning Jan. 14.

The courses are limited to students in the health care and law enforcement disciplines, and require the permission of the department to enroll. Interested students should contact Dana Frase at dfrase@uakron.edu.

Some UA students have reported receiving a letter and an application from the “Student Financial Resource Center.” This is a company that is charging $65 for assistance with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and finding merit-based aid programs.

According to Michelle Ellis, UA's executive director of student financial aid, this is not a company UA endorses for its services. And, there is no need to pay for assistance in completing the FAFSA.

For any questions related to financial aid or the FAFSA, please visit the Office of Student Financial Aid online.
