Good sports have shiny heads, all for a good cause

Good sportsBy the end of Tuesday evening, there were five bald heads and piles of hair on the floor, but it was all for a good cause when members of Sigma Nu and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities joined forces for “Bald is Beautiful” at the Up 'til Dawn FUNdathon to raise money for St. Jude Hospital in Memphis.

The fraternities competed ahead of the event to see which could raise the most money. The winning organization kept their hair and five members of the other group agreed to have their heads shaved. The men of Tau Kappa Epsilon raised $273.06 and Sigma Nu raised $173.26.

Members of UA's Up 'til Dawn chapter, along with students at more than 100 other colleges and universities across the United States, host fundraisers throughout the year to raise funds to support the mission of St. Jude, which is to ensure that “no child should die in the dawn of life.” The group, on campus since 2006, raises more than $24,000 annually for the hospital.

Although the “shavedown” was the highlight of the evening, guests at the FUNdathon enjoyed free food, prizes, simulated tours of the hospital, and the chance to kick start their own fundraising efforts by forming teams and sending letters or e-mails to friends and family members seeking support.

Up 'til Dawn is recruiting more teams of students and faculty and staff to join the fight to end childhood cancer. Those interested should e-mail utd@zips.uakron.edu.
