RE: Summit on Retention: Toward an Action Plan

Our deep gratitude to the more than 500 faculty, staff and students who participated in one or more sessions during the UA Summit on Retention. Your presence and your engagement are the first and most important steps in Building our Action Plan from Persistence to Completion and Placement—as we have collectively promised ourselves and our students.

As Dr. Vincent Tinto so eloquently (and repeatedly) said: This is hard work. It does not happen overnight. Our plan must be intentional, structured, coordinated and sustainable. He also stressed it is not so much about what we do or say at the Summit, but much more about what we do in the days, weeks, and, indeed, the years ahead. Institutional change takes time but it can happen, with dedicated people to make it happen.

We believe you are those dedicated people. Already, the collaboration of University Council, Faculty Senate, Diversity Council, and Undergraduate Student Government led to a dynamic Summit that puts us on the right trajectory.

Whether or not you were able to attend the Summit, your ideas to improve retention and completion are welcome. Please email them to retention@uakron.edu.

A new retention website will include ideas for implementation and highlights from the Summit along with a video of Dr. Tinto's addresses. Expect the site to go live before the end of the month.

Thank you for all you do and will do as we collectively design and implement a retention, completion and placement action plan for student success. Let's remember Dr. Tinto's powerful words:

"You are on an important journey. This will be hard work. You can't do everything all at once. Stay the course and when the going gets tough, remember it is not about you but about the students. Their future is our future."

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
