The steam line repair is progressing at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC). However, due to the large scope of the project and a need for additional support to be added to the pipe, the work will continue into next week and weekend. Based on this information, the SRWC will remain closed until a reopening date can be confirmed in January.

Here is the schedule through Jan. 5, 2014, for Ocasek Natatorium fitness, racquetball and pool.  If there are any changes, we will be sure to update all patrons. The schedule can also be found on the SRWC website.

Students in the Methods & Materials in Health Education class this fall participated in the UA Pay-it-Forward project that not only benefited them, it helped Akron Public Schools students as well.

Liz Fettrow, an assistant professor in Sport Science and Wellness Education, organized her students in groups and paired them with local nonprofit groups. The students not only volunteered time to the organizations, they conducted in-depth health needs assessments to learn how the organizations served the needs of youth and young adults. In turn, members of each group used the information collected to develop a presentation and advocate for a $1,000 grant for their organization at the end of the semester.

The winning group represented Leggett Community Learning Center. The $1,000 award, provided through an Institute for Teaching and Learning service-learning grant, will fund the Backpacks of Love and dental programs offered at the school.

“The students are all pre-service or in-service educators looking to obtain licensure in health,” says Fettrow. Given the emphasis on community partnerships here at UA, I thought the UA Pay-it-Forward project was a profound way to make a difference.”

Pictured in the photo, from left, are Drew Alboreo, Michelle Sutton, Christopher Hamilton, Rick Sims, assistant principal at Leggett, Liz Fettrow and Brittany Carbone.

Hundreds of tubas trimmed with tinsel, garlands and lights will fill the stage of E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall for the 34th anniversary of Akron's beloved TubaChristmas on Saturday, Dec. 21.

There are two performances scheduled, at noon and 2:30 p.m. They are free and open to the public as a holiday gift to the community from the School of Music and Thomas Hall.

Dave Lieberth, Akron's retired deputy mayor, is the guest soloist. Tucker Jolly, founder of Akron's TubaChristmas and emeritus professor of music at UA, conducts the holiday carols and sing-alongs with guest conductors Robert Jorgensen and Andy Larson.

Akron's TubaChristmas is free for the audience while the musicians pay a $10 registration fee to participate. Low brass musicians who want to play can register on the day of the performances in the ticket lobby of Thomas Hall, accessible from the parking deck, between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. A rehearsal will be held from from 9:30 to 11:30 am.

Committee for Research on Women and Gender Call for Proposals Jan. 17
Time: n/a

spacer image
The Committee for Research on Women and Gender (CROW) at The University of Akron is pleased to announce our call for proposals for our 6th annual undergraduate and graduate conference.

The conference theme will be "The Multiple Faces of Activism: Feminism in the 21st Century." Our theme is purposely a broad and inclusive one, to provide opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students working on a variety of topics and within many disciplines to participate. We welcome proposals for scholarship and practice that does not necessarily fall into the realm of activism as well.

This conference is open to any student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program whose work centers on women and/or gender. While we expect most women's and gender studies applicants will be contributing to fields associated with the humanities and social sciences, we especially want to encourage those students enrolled in MFA, performance art programs, nursing, law, biology and other disciplines to apply. We will work with them to find appropriate ways to present their work.

The conference will be March 14-15, 2014. Please see our website for information regarding submissions: http://uakronstudentlife.orgsync.com/org/committeeforresearchonwomengender36182/Conference.

The deadline to submit a proposal is Friday, Jan. 17, 2014. Please share this opportunity with your colleagues and students. Please contact Ruth at rvw3@zips.uakron.edu with any questions.
