Out of a block of ice, one can sculpt a fish or kangaroo or, even more impressive, a career.

Ice carvers from The University of Akron's Hospitality Club have carved out a gainful niche in the fields of culinary arts and hospitality management. Three alumni, including Olympic gold medal winner Aaron Costic, have even started their own companies.

To demonstrate their talents, students and alumni will gather on Wednesday, Jan. 15, for this year's Ice Fest. Ice and vegetables will be transformed into a gallery of frozen and fresh art in and outside the Student Union from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Ice Fest will feature, in addition to its usual attractions, a new, two-round format for its speed carving competition; a 3,000-pound, 10-block, 8-by-8-foot wall of ice topped with Zippy the kangaroo; and salt dough for guests to mold into their own sculptures. Full story.

Akron makes area streets safer for pedestrians Jan. 3
Time: n/a

Banners are in place at the busy intersection of E. Exchange Street and Grant Street, and E. Exchange Street and Sumner Street, alerting drivers and pedestrians to a new “Pedestrians Only” crossing phase which stops vehicular traffic in all directions to allow pedestrians to cross in all directions.

“With new student housing options available, foot traffic has and will continue to sharply increase,” says Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic of the change. “By stopping traffic completely to let our residents and students cross in all directions, our pedestrians are safer because pedestrian-vehicle conflicts are necessarily reduced.”

For this “pedestrian scramble” to work, individuals must only walk when traffic is stopped in all directions and the pedestrian signals indicate it is time to walk. “If the rules are followed, then it is the safest method available to protect our pedestrians,” says Akron Chief of Police Jim Nice. “We are going to be monitoring this intersection for compliance and if the rules are not followed, police will start handing out citations.”

Denine M. Rocco, associate vice president and dean of students, says the change is a welcome one.

“Our Safety Task Force has worked diligently with the city of Akron to enhance the quality of life on and around our campus. We are most appreciative of the application of this new technology to pedestrian safety.”

ANNOUNCING: Martin Luther King, Jr., Activities Fair. January 20, 2014. The University of Akron, Student Union Ballroom. 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The University of Akron’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Activities Fair enables the community to mark the King holiday as a “day on” rather than a “day off”! It also serves as an opportunity for community outreach that provides awareness of the University community to children in grades K-12 and their families.

The celebration has been very well-received and attended, and the children enjoy the activities and excitement of being on a college campus. Community and student organizations provide activities and information that encourage non-violence, civic responsibility, respect for differences, and the importance of education.

Committee for Research on Women and Gender Call for Proposals: Deadline Approaching! Jan. 17
Time: n/a

spacer image
The Committee for Research on Women and Gender (CROW) at The University of Akron is pleased to announce our call for proposals for our 6th annual undergraduate and graduate conference.

The conference theme will be "The Multiple Faces of Activism: Feminism in the 21st Century." Our theme is purposely a broad and inclusive one, in order to provide opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students working on a variety of topics and within many disciplines to participate. We welcome proposals for scholarship and practice that does not necessarily fall into the realm of activism as well. This conference is open to any student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program whose work centers on women and/or gender. While we expect most women's and gender studies applicants will be contributing to fields associated with the humanities and social sciences, we especially want to encourage those students enrolled in MFA, performance art programs, nursing, law, biology, and other disciplines to apply and will work with them to find appropriate ways to present their work.

The conference will be March 14-15, 2014. Please see our website for information regarding submissions: http://uakronstudentlife.orgsync.com/org/committeeforresearchonwomengender36182/Conference.

The deadline to submit a proposal is Friday, Jan. 17, 2014. Please share this opportunity with your colleagues and students. Please contact Ruth at rvw3@zips.uakron.edu with any questions.
