Part of the fun of attending the annual Ice Fest on Buchtel Common is taking your turn on the throne carved in ice, as Jim Tressel, executive vice president of student success, discovered.

You can read more about the Jan. 15 festivities, where students and alumni let the chainsaws and chisels fly to carve a wide variety of sculptures at Ice Fest 2014, and see a “very cool” time-lapse version of the festivities by videographer Steve Allen, along with more photos. You also can view photos on the Ice Fest 2014 Facebook photo album.

The Buchtelite seeks input in reinventing itself Jan. 17

The Buchtelite is entering a new phase in its 125th year of publication. With key departures among staff — due mostly to graduations or heavy course loads for the semester — the student-run newspaper will suspend print publication temporarily as the current staff considers how The Buchtelite can reinvent itself as a contemporary student-run news outlet that is relevant and sustainable.

The newspaper's adviser, former professional journalist Roger Mezger, is guiding the remaining staff through a transition period with the goal of redesigning The Buchtelite to better meet student needs through innovative digital media production techniques and standards. It is anticipated that this transition will take place during the spring semester — engaging students, faculty and community-based experts — as The Buchtelite builds a skilled staff to develop the newspaper into a successful multi-media venture that may include a vibrant website, a print component, social media, digital audio and video platforms.

Read comments from The Buchtelite adviser on its website.

Financial aid experts on campus will help you for free

spacer image
You may have been contacted by organizations charging a fee to help you apply for financial aid.

Before you pay for help, please know that our financial aid office is staffed by experts to help you for free, says Michelle Ellis, executive director of the Office of Student Financial Aid. UA's financial aid counselors will work with students and parents, and the U.S. Department of Education does not charge anyone to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

"I have worked in this field for about 18 years," Ellis said, "and we see these offers from time to time. It's not necessary to pay a fee to get assistance. We encourage anyone who has questions about the financial aid process to come talk with us. We'll help them for free."

You can stop by the Student Services Center in the lobby of Simmons Hall for assistance, or call the Office of Student Financial Aid at 330-972-7032 or write finaid@uakron.edu.

Developing Team Cohesion Jan. 29

The Developing Team Cohesion seminar is designed to educate participants on building teams, developing a common purpose, understanding of why teams fail, and the life cycle of a team. This information is important because a group of individuals is not automatically a team. Understanding how to forge those groups into teams that have a common purpose and perform synergistically will allow your organization to operate at a higher level.

Participants who attend this session will:

Learn how to establish a common purpose for a group/organization
Developing an understanding of why teams fail and how to engage in positive turbulence
Learn to identify the stages a group goes through while becoming a team
Experience those stages of team development
Practice identifying other’s strengths and placing them in roles that play to those strengths

Values and Leadership Workshop Jan. 28
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Identifying, understanding, and living your personal values are essential facets of leadership. Knowing your values and understanding the impact they have on your decisions and leadership style shapes the way you participate in groups/organizations. Value driven actions are themselves neither good nor bad, but when a group of individuals share values and judge others’ actions based on those collective values, they become the basis for determining if those actions were ethical. Understanding your values and how to align those values with groups will help you to effectively practice leadership in any organization.

Participants who attend this session will:

Identify their personal values
Be able to articulate those values to others
Develop an understanding of group/organizational values
Learn about ethics and its centrality to leadership

Organizational Citizenship Workshop Jan. 22
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Organizational Citizenship is the practice of discretionary behavior that promotes efficient and effective functioning of an organization. Organizations typically have few identified “leaders” amongst many “followers”. Organizational Citizenship explores how those “followers” and “leaders” can instead be a steward of leadership by becoming an organizational citizen. The information and techniques that are discussed and practiced can be applied to any organization that you are or will be a member of, helping you to be an effective leader when you are not in a defined leadership role.

Participants who attend this session will:

Develop an understanding of organizational citizenship behaviors
Learn to embrace change and confusion so that it becomes a resource, rather than a barrier
Participate in team building activities that will challenge and support participants in the application of leadership skills

Deeply rooted in the musical tradition of his native New Orleans, where he grew up playing with his family's well-known band, pianist/harmonaboardist Jon Batiste has developed a uniquely current, uplifting, and playful brand of jazz that integrates his classical Juilliard training with contemporary mainstream sounds. He is currently touring with his band, Stay Human, whose mission is to bring the joy of jazz to the masses, transforming each space they play by breaking down the barriers between audience and performer, and inviting people to experience the music as they never thought it could be played.
