Important Information about Interim Progress Indicators Jan. 22
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Beginning Monday, January 27th through the end of the fifth week on Sunday, February 16th, interim progress indicators submitted by instructors will be available for viewing in My Akron for REGULAR session (15-week) developmental, 100 or 200 level classes.

Why Have Progress Indicators
This feature will allow you to monitor your progress in your class(es) early in the semester (3rd to 5th week). Students will receive either an “S” (satisfactory) or “U” (unsatisfactory). If you receive a “U” indicator, you are encouraged to meet with your academic advisor or instructor to discuss your course work.

How to View Progress Indicators
Interim progress indicators are viewable in the same manner as final grades via My Akron. Instructions on how to view interim progress indicators can be found here.

If the “Interim Grades” tab does not yet exist on your “View My Grades” page that simply means that your instructor(s) have not yet entered a progress indicator. Once your instructors enter a progress indicator, the tab will be available for you to review the indicator(s) entered. If the field is blank, your instructor has not entered an interim grade. Interim progress indicators can be updated by your instructor often during the 3rd to 5th week in the semester.

Questions regarding the process for viewing interim progress indicators may be directed to the Office of the University Registrar at registrar@uakron.edu.

spacer image
The University of Akron is once again serving as the Summit County host of College Goal Sunday on Feb. 9, beginning at 2 p.m. in Simmons Hall. The college financial aid event is presented annually at sites around the state by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and is endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents.

College Goal Sunday is designed to provide assistance to students and parents in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the application that is required to be completed to receive federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as need-based state grants.

This is a free event, and is open to current college students at any institution, as well as prospective students planning to attend a college in Ohio or out-of-state, and their parents. Registration is not required, but is encouraged. To register for College Goal Sunday, visit www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org, or call 1-800-233-6734.

Two other UA campuses will serve as College Goal Sunday sites as well. They are:

The University of Akron Medina County University Center, 6300 Technology Lane, Medina.

Wayne College Holmes County Higher Education Center, located at 88-B East Jackson St., Millersburg.

The Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) is a nonprofit, professional organization for individuals actively engaged in the administration of financial aid within the state of Ohio for higher education. As an educational organization, OASFAA strives to offer resources to students, families and high school advisers to promote higher education and increase awareness of financial aid opportunities. Other College Goal Sunday sponsors are the Ohio College Access Network, USA Funds and Great Lakes.

Up 'til Dawn, a registered student organization, works each year to raise funds and awareness for the work being done at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis to fight childhood cancers.

For the second year, Up 'til Dawn will sponsor a “Slime Event.” Students, faculty and staff can make a donation to the jar(s) of the individual(s) they would like to see “slimed” with a green goo made from gelatin, cornstarch and other common ingredients.

You can drop off donations at tables in the Student Union on the day of the event, Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations can also be dropped into the jars in the Center for Service and Leadership each day during business hours. There will be one last chance to make donations at the event, which starts at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 28, near Starbucks on the second floor of the Student Union.

Once the totals for each jar are calculated, the top three contestants will be called to the stage to be, well, slimed with a bucket of green goo as the audience cheers them on.

Here are the willing volunteers:

  • Stephanie Zende, graduate assistant, Civic Engagement

  • Thad Doyle, senior associate director of student life

  • Katelin Getz, assistant director of fraternity and sorority life

  • Dr. John Messina, associate vice president, student affairs and chief housing officer

  • John MacDonald, interim director, Student Recreation and Wellness Services

  • Chelsea Phipps, manager of intramurals

  • Alison Doehring, assistant director of student life

  • Turner Anderson, president, Undergraduate Student Government

  • Dr. Ann Usher, director, School of Music

  • Brandon Mikulski, assistant director, Living Learning Community Program

  • Tiffany Montgomery, coordinator, Residence Life

  • Anne Bruno, executive director, Student Union

UA seeks smokers' cooperation Jan. 24
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To comply with Ohio's Smoke-Free Workplace Law, UA forbids smoking in any enclosed area, including buildings, parking decks and University vehicles.

To comply with the requirements of this law and to help ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter any area in which smoking is prohibited, no smoking is permitted within 25 feet of an entranceway, window or ventilation system of any University building or enclosed area.

The law also requires that the University remove cigarette receptacles from areas on campus where smoking is prohibited. That means that smokers will have to fully extinguish their cigarettes when done and then place them in receptacles that are located at least 25 feet from the entrance of University buildings.

The University is asking all smokers to be mindful of the restrictions in and around buildings, to be cautious and courteous when discarding cigarettes and to refrain from removing cigarette receptacles from their intended locations.

The Akron Blades is a club team sport, but we compete twice a semester with universities from Ohio and the surrounding Great Lakes states. This semester we'll be hosting both the divisional and regional tournaments for the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) and the qualifying and regional tournaments for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI).

This is a great time to join a club sport with all this action taking place this semester. There's no commitment to participate in outside activities or community service events, so if you're hesitant, give it a try and see how you like the table tennis atmosphere. GO ZIPS.
