The Department of Student Life and Graduate Student Government have undertaken a project to recognize our international student population in a visual way. We are hosting an “unveiling” of the quilt on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union second floor lounge (across from Starbucks). We would like to invite you to attend the reception celebrating the impact of our international students on The University of Akron.

Interdisciplinary Conference: Monstrosity and Deviance March 13
Time: n/a

The Society of Akron Graduate English Scholars is pleased to announce its upcoming interdisciplinary conference on March 13, 2014. This year, we are excited to welcome speakers, creative writers, and scholars from various disciplines to discuss the theme, “Monstrosity and Deviance.”

What is a monster? Everyone has his or her own monstrosities to overcome, and his or her own forms of deviance to encounter. What are “norms” in society? Ethical and moral issues are thrown our way every day; how do we handle them? “Deviance” is our way of breaking those so-called norms in society. Perhaps those challenges are monstrous; perhaps those monsters are found in disease or mental disorders.

When do we encounter “deviance” in education? What “monstrous” feats do we try to accomplish with our studies? This year, our conference seeks to explore these issues and spark creative discussion. It is our hope that we can present panels that cross disciplines to gain a broader and greater understanding of the “Monstrosity and Deviance” in our society and our studies today.

We hope to see you on March 13 at the Student Union!

Values and Leadership Workshop Feb. 4

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Identifying, understanding and living your personal values are essential facets of leadership. Knowing your values and understanding the impact they have on your decisions and leadership style shapes the way you participate in groups and organizations.

Value-driven actions are themselves neither good nor bad, but when a group of individuals share values and judge others’ actions based on those collective values, they become the basis for determining if those actions were ethical.

This workshop will help you understand your values and how to align those values with groups to help you to effectively practice leadership in any organization. Participants who attend this session will:

Identify their personal values

Be able to articulate those values to others

Develop an understanding of group/organizational values

Learn about ethics and its centrality to leadership
