Academic programs being reviewed
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
As you know, UA offers hundreds of bachelor’s and associate degree programs and tracks. These extensive, high quality offerings provide you with significant opportunities to be successful on diverse career paths.

Recently, as a result of action by The University of Akron’s Board of Trustees, there has been some media coverage about a handful of academic degree programs or specialty tracks currently under review to suspend admissions for fall 2014.

This kind of program review is a normal process that occurs from time to time at all universities.

We want to assure you that decisions that may be made about any specific academic program or track should not impact your ability to be successful as a student at The University of Akron.

Even if a program or specialty track is suspended, students currently active in those programs will be given the opportunity to complete their degrees. Faculty and advisors will work with the students to make sure their academic requirements are being met.

For more information, review this FAQ or contact your academic advisor.

The Department of Student Life and Graduate Student Government have undertaken a project to recognize our international student population in a visual way. We have taken a suggestion from the students to have some visual representation in the Student Union of the countries represented by international students and have created a quilt of flags which was designed and sewn by an University of Akron student.

We are hosting an “unveiling” of the quilt on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union in the second floor lounge (across from Starbucks). We would like to invite you to attend the reception celebrating the impact of our international students on The University of Akron.

Light refreshments will be served

Taking Care Week

spacer image
The Counseling and Testing Center will be hosting the third annual “Taking Care Week” during the last week of February (2/24-2/28). This weeklong event provides a variety of opportunities to relax, have fun, and connect with others. Each day focuses on a different aspect of self-care (physical, emotional, others, and future/career). The majority of the events are constructed to be of the “drop in” nature, where you can receive valuable information or relax and have fun in a brief period of time (10-15 minutes). We realize that University of Akron students have busy schedules, but we find that short periods of self-care are important throughout each day. Recyclemania Feb. 3 - March 29

UA joins in Recyclemania competition

Annually, the University competes in the international recycling contest — Recyclemania — now under way at schools across the country. Throughout the competition, which continues through March 31, recyclable materials are collected and measured from each participating building and residence hall on campus. At the end of the competition the total weight of each recyclable material is reported to the Recyclemania committee and considered in the overall ranking. UA's goal with Recyclemania is to foster campus-wide enthusiasm for recycling and continuing efforts to reduce the waste stream.

The winning school in each of the seven categories in the competition will be recognized on the Recyclemania website. Winning schools will also receive a trophy made entirely of recycled materials. So remember, in order to win we must reduce our waste, reuse appropriate materials and then recycle.

For more information on what materials UA is currently recycling, please visit the Campus Recycling website, or contact Andrew Henry, recycling superintendent, at ext. 6019 or andrewh@uakron.edu.

UA seeks smokers' cooperation Jan. 24
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To comply with Ohio's Smoke-Free Workplace Law, UA forbids smoking in any enclosed area, including buildings, parking decks and University vehicles.

To comply with the requirements of this law and to help ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter any area in which smoking is prohibited, no smoking is permitted within 25 feet of an entranceway, window or ventilation system of any University building or enclosed area.

The law also requires that the University remove cigarette receptacles from areas on campus where smoking is prohibited. That means that smokers will have to fully extinguish their cigarettes when done and then place them in receptacles that are located at least 25 feet from the entrance of University buildings.

The University is asking all smokers to be mindful of the restrictions in and around buildings, to be cautious and courteous when discarding cigarettes and to refrain from removing cigarette receptacles from their intended locations.

More information is available on the Ohio Department of Health's Web site.

Organizational Citizenship Workshop Feb. 12
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Organizational Citizenship is the practice of discretionary behavior that promotes efficient and effective functioning of an organization. Organizations typically have few identified “leaders” amongst many “followers”. Organizational Citizenship explores how those “followers” and “leaders” can instead be a steward of leadership by becoming an organizational citizen. The information and techniques that are discussed and practiced can be applied to any organization that you are or will be a member of, helping you to be an effective leader when you are not in a defined leadership role.

Participants who attend this session will:

Develop an understanding of organizational citizenship behaviors
Learn to embrace change and confusion so that it becomes a resource, rather than a barrier
Participate in team building activities that will challenge and support participants in the application of leadership skills

Punishing Black Bodies: The Nerve Center of Mass Incarceration in Civil Society Feb. 15
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

spacer image
James Logan, associate professor of religion and associate professor and director of the program in African and African American Studies at Earlham College, will present “Punishing Black Bodies: The Nerve Center of Mass Incarceration in Civil Society” on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. at the University of Akron Student Union Theatre as the last on-campus event of Rethinking Race.

Logan’s presentation will discuss the excessive use of imprisonment as a means of domestic crime control and corporate profit and how that compromises the societal good, disproportionately affects African Americans and exacerbates the destabilization of low-income communities of color.

He will consider the difference a moral vision of “good punishment” might make in confronting U.S. mass incarceration and in healing the memories of crime within a communal setting of forgiveness, reconciliation and restoration. “It should be very hard for us to give up on one another,” says Logan.

Born in Harlem and raised in the South Bronx, Logan earned a B.A. at Goshen College, an M.A. from Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary and a Ph.D. at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the author of Good Punishment? Christian Moral Practice and U.S. Imprisonment and co-editor of Ethics That Matter: African, Caribbean, and African American Sources.

This event is sponsored by The University of Akron School of Law and Alpha Phi Alpha Homes, Inc. It is free and open to the public.
