Students place third in statewide competition Feb. 21
Time: n/a

spacer image

UA's team of six Construction Engineering Technology students placed third among the 10 teams participating in the Ohio Contractor's Association Student Estimating Competition this month in Columbus. The UA team placed just behind The Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati in the two-day competition. The association, an industry trade group representing heavy highway and large commercial contractors, has sponsored the event annually since 2000. (Team members pictured above, from left, are James Nichols, Jeffery Humerickhouse, Alexander Licitri, James Buck, Erin Spahr and Benjamin O'Neill.)

For the competition, teams are given a complete set of drawings, construction documents and supporting materials to replicate a real-world bidding scenario, along with an electronic bid sheet. The roadway and bridge project had the costs of some line items redacted, requiring the students to fill in their own estimates, based on the components of labor, materials and equipment. Each team also had to record its thought process as part of its submission at the end of the first day.

The second day of the competition requires each team to give an oral and visual presentation of their project to a panel of judges that critiques the teams' documentation and presentations, and chooses the winners.

Paul Rawlings, a visiting instructor in Construction Engineering Technology, served as the team's adviser.
