UA's co-op and internship program gets big boost from state
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Many students at UA will benefit from new or expanded co-op and internship programs here thanks to a nearly $800,0000 grant the University received from the state this week.

The award to UA is the third largest of 25 granted statewide. It will be matched with funds from key industries and other donations to create new or to expand existing applied-experience opportunities for students.

At UA, the grant will be used to provide additional funding to employers offering new co-op positions and to enable small and startup businesses to provide students with co-ops at competitive salaries. Full story.

UA's Career Center is the place to start your search for internships or full-time employment.

spacer image
The Committee for Research on Women and Gender is pleased to present "Under Our Skin," a panel of performances by 3 undergraduate Antioch College students. In “Thick & Thin,” a woman comic lets gendered jokes get under her skin. In “Bathe,” a woman rubs herself with charcoal and then washes herself with milk. In “Key . . .” a woman navigates internal obstacles with chalk and chains. Together these works explore gender roles and women’s experience, also raising questions of race, class, education, sexuality and popular culture. Participating in a long tradition of feminist performance art, Under Our Skin will allow multiple bodies to arrive at the “Multiple Faces of Activism.”

The performance is free and open to all University of Akron students, faculty, and CROW conference attendees.

From March 17 to April 6, Bierce, Science and Technology, and the Law libraries will sponsor their semiannual “Food for Fines” drive to support the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank's “Harvest for Hunger” Campaign. Over the past decade, more than 20,000 pounds of food has been collected by UA Libraries for those in need.

Anyone can take advantage of this opportunity to pay off fines and help a good cause — 1 food item = $1 toward your fines, and there's no limit to the number of items that you may bring to the circulation desks at each library. This offer cannot be used to pay for items that are lost or billed to your library account. Also, we cannot accept perishable, expired, or damaged food items.

Values and Leadership Workshop March 18

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Identifying, understanding and living your personal values are essential facets of leadership. Knowing your values and understanding the impact they have on your decisions and leadership style shapes the way you participate in groups/organizations. Value-driven actions are themselves neither good nor bad, but when a group of individuals share values and judge others’ actions based on those collective values, they become the basis for determining if those actions were ethical. Understanding your values and how to align those values with groups will help you to effectively practice leadership in any organization.

Participants who attend this session will:

Identify their personal values
Be able to articulate those values to others
Develop an understanding of group/organizational values
Learn about ethics and its centrality to leadership
