Police will check your near-campus house over break
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
For a burglar, student housing around college campuses can be alluring because the burglar knows that many of the homes will be unoccupied at times throughout the year. That’s why UA police and the city police will team up again to make periodic checks of unoccupied student homes in select neighborhoods near campus.

Important:

  1. Though this free program should help deter break-ins, there’s no guarantee implied.
  2. Officers are unable to check on individual apartments in large complexes.
  3. Please do not register for the program if someone else (like a roommate) will be in your campus home/rental over break.

Scholarship opportunity; apply by March 31!
spacer image

spacer image
spacer image
The Osher Foundation Reentry Scholarship was established by The Bernard Osher Foundation to provide assistance to adult learners who otherwise might not be able to afford a college education. It offers a financial incentive, as well as important recognition, for the most qualified students to work toward degree completion and, ultimately, fulfill their career objectives. Students selected to be Osher Scholars will:

  • Be between 25 and 50 years of age
  • Have been away from school for a minimum of 5 years (you can be a current student and be eligible if you meet this requirement)
  • Be working toward the completion of first baccalaureate degree
  • Be enrolled full time (carrying at least 12 hours) part time (carrying a minimum of six credit hours)
  • Have completed a minimum of 30 credits with at least one semester of completed coursework at The University of Akron with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.

To demonstrate movement toward their degree objectives, Osher Scholars must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 at the end of the first semester on scholarship. If a student's GPA falls below a 2.0, the student must document the reasons for the substandard performance, and submit a plan of action to raise the GPA.

Having maintained an appropriate GPA and compiled a strong record of academic performance, Osher Scholars who meet the application requirements may have the opportunity to renew their Osher Reentry Scholarship award, and/or receive additional scholarship support when they are admitted to their degree-granting colleges.

The deadline to apply is March 31.

This year National Volunteer Week is April 5-11. It is a time to recognize the inspiring and encouraging people that seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. serveAkron has multiple events each day as well as the Jeans for Teens Donation Drive.

All week, serveAkron will be hosting a Jeans for Teens Donation Drive. We will be collecting jeans of all sizes in good condition. The jeans we collect will be given to Aeropostale to be donated to homeless youth in our community.

About one in three people experiencing homelessness is under the age of 18. One of the items homeless youth request most is a pair of jeans. In six years, Aeropostale has collected more than 3.5 million pairs of jeans for this cause.

Bring a pair of jeans to donate to any event this week, and drop them off at the Center for Service and Leadership in the Student Union.
