We hope your semester is going well. As the semester comes to a close, the Office of the University Registrar would like to remind students that the deadline to withdraw from any spring classes is Friday, April 15 at 5 p.m. Students wishing to withdraw from class(es) should obtain their instructor and advisor's signature on a Registration/Schedule Adjustment Form (available at http://www.uakron.edu/registrar/Forms.php) and bring the form to the Registration counter in the lobby of Simmons Hall. After this deadline, requests for withdrawals cannot be processed.

Questions regarding class withdrawals may be directed to the Office of the University Registrar by e-mail at Registrar@uakron.edu or by contacting Registration at 330-972-8300 (option 4 for Registration).

Opening reception for the 'Man & Beast' exhibition April 4 - April 27

The Myers School of Art announces the opening of a major show, "Man & Beast, Part II of Regional Collections," on Monday, April 4 in the Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall.

Curated by art Professor Mark Soppeland, the exhibition examines the relationships between humans and animals, presenting a historically and culturally diverse range of attitudes in the use of animal imagery in art, craft and design. Exhibition themes include: Innocent Witness, Loving Them to Death and Designer Beasts. More than 400 works by Mark Mothersbaugh, Claus Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, William Wegman, Jud Yalkut and others are included. The exhibition will continue through April 27.

An opening reception will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 4. The campus community is invited. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. The gallery is closed Sunday. This workshop is presented by the Office of Accessibility and is offered to help students with disabilities succeed in college, but all students, with, or without disabilities, are welcome to attend. Topics will include various physical access issues; the accessibility of technology such as classroom WebCT, Zipline, and UA web pages, as well as how to speak to instructors about your accommodation. This workshop will address ways to get involved to work for positive outcomes and change.

Join Dining Services for the "In Your Face" hot dog and pie eating contests, part of the Food Jamboree on April 5 in the Student Union ballrooms. The winners will receive a mountain bike or a $250 Robertson Cafe gift card and all participants will receive a great gift. Sign up for these contests at the Zip Card table - the first six people to sign up at the Jamboree will be in the contest. Sign up early because the contest begins at noon.

Students with an interest in law are invited to join The Pre-Law Club in welcoming Dr. Chistopher Banks, Associate Professor of Political Science and University of Akron Pre-Law Advisor, to our next seminar from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6. Dr. Banks will discuss the importance of working as a criminal defense attorney.

During the meeting, we will also hold Pre-Law Club officer elections for the 2005-2006 academic year. All existing members who have completed at least one semester at the University of Akron are eligible to run for an office, but need to contact Holly Johnston ahead of the meeting so that their names can be added to the ballot.

We will also present our annual Outstanding Member, Outstanding Senior Member, and Outstanding Officer Awards at this meeting. All those who have been nominated for an award must be present to receive their certificates.

A symposium on the consequences of Issue 1, Ohio's marriage amendment, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 7, in the Student Union Theatre. Panelists will include representatives from the Human Rights Campaign, the Alliance Defense Fund, the ACLU, the Pro-Family Network and The University of Akron School of Law. This will be an open dialogue on Issue 1, followed by questions and answers.

Following the program there will be a reception with free pizza, soda, and other snacks. The symposium is being coordinated by the Gay Straight Law Alliance, the Law Association for Women, the Federalist Society, the ACLU Student Organization and the Department of Student Life.

The third movie in the film series on war — sponsored by the Center for Conflict Management, the Anthropology Club and others — will be "The Panama Deception" (1992), an Oscar-winning documentary that tells the story of the invasion of Panama in 1990. What were the reasons given for the military action, how was it done, and what were the consequences of the war?

The movie is free and open to the public. A discussion will follow.

National honorary for adult learners taps 100 at UA April 10

Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national scholastic honorary for adult undergraduates, has tapped 100 students for membership at The University of Akron. Those selected are at least 25 years old and have a grade point average of 3.837 or higher, with at least 60 credit hours completed.

ASL recognizes students who have achieved outstanding academic success, while managing other responsibilities such as family, career and community involvement. The induction ceremony, for those invited to join this organization, will be held Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m. in Ballroom C of the Student Union. Inductees are encouraged to bring their families. A dessert reception will follow.

If you have not yet returned your response card to Adult Focus, please do so by April 4. Honor cords are available for graduating ASL members, and may be purchased at the Adult Focus office.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.
