City to strictly enforce its litter ordinance
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
It is time for spring cleaning!

The City of Akron has announced that the Health Department will be strictly enforcing the Anti-Litter city ordinance starting immediately. Please be aware that city inspectors will be surveying the University Park area for litter code violations.

"Litter" includes, but is not limited to: tree limbs, brush, dog waste, lumber, garbage, tires, auto parts, furniture (this includes couches and all furniture not designed and sold for outdoor use), bedding, appliances, construction waste, fencing materials, bricks, blocks, concrete and miscellaneous exterior storage. The only items permitted outdoors are outdoor grills, conventional lawn furniture, swing sets and birdbaths. All items, especially couches will need to be removed.

The City of Akron Health Department warning states that if litter is found on your property an order will be posted to the owner of the property in violation. If the order is not complied with within the specified time given in the order, the litter may be removed by the Health Department at the expense of the owner.

Anyone who is seen littering may be found guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree and shall be fined not less than $500. Students found in violation of the anti-litter ordinance will be referred to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs and may be subject to disciplinary action separate from any civil or criminal court proceedings.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the anti-litter ordinance please contact the Office of Student Judicial Affairs.
