Student Judicial Affairs recruitment and leadership
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron Office of Student Judicial Affairs is offering two unique leadership opportunities for students. This semester, two board positions are available to graduate and undergraduate students: The Student Judicial Advocacy Board and Student Hearing Board. Each position offers a chance for students to become involved in the Judicial Affairs process.

The Student Judicial Advocacy Board serves as a guide for students who are involved in the Judicial Affairs process. Advocates will meet with the student and explain the conduct system. The purpose of the Student Judicial Advocate is not to advise the student as to the best course of action, but rather to serve as a resource to the student. A one-hour training session is required in order to participate in this exciting program.

Student Hearing Board members continue to be an important part of the Judicial Affairs Process here on campus. The board members are directly involved in the hearing board’s decision-making process, which differs from the role of Student Judicial Advocates. Student Hearing Board members become involved only when the formal hearing board is convened. Board members attend hearings, consider evidence and determine what/if disciplinary action is appropriate. Student Hearing Board members will be required to attend a two-hour training session in order to participate in the program.

To become involved in one or both of these programs, please e-mail Dale Adams, Graduate Assistant for Student Judicial Affairs, at sugradasst2@uakron.edu. Please reply by September 30, 2005.

As a new Fraternity here at The University of Akron, we are proud to announce our first annual Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity “Puppy Love” philanthropy event Oct. 10 through 13, 2005. The proceeds raised will be donated to Alpha Sigma Phi’s national philanthropy, Canine Companions for Independence (http://www.cci.org). Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs to people with developmental or physical disabilities who can demonstrate that a canine companion will enhance their independence or quality of life. Organizations like CCI rely on private contributions for financial support, and it is Alpha Sigma Phi’s intention to raise a significant amount of funding for this cause.

In addition to aiding CCI, we plan to collect gift donations for Summit County Children's Services Christmas program. SCCS protects abused, neglected and dependent children by providing services to strengthen families when children are at risk and alternative placements when children are removed from their homes.

Throughout the week, Alpha Sigma Phi will operate various week-long collection tables and bins. Of course, this week will be lots of FUN with big events and continual contests. Those events include: Most Creative Doghouse Contest, Most Donations Collected Contest, awards to winners at the conclusion, two nights at Buffalo Wild Wings, Phoenix Base Camp-Out, and a huge, traditional Greek dinner/silent auction of Gift Cards, Apple iPods, Cool Zips Gear, Planet Underground goodies, and much more, at the UA Recreation Center.
