UA police: Please program emergency number into your cell phone
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University Police Department is asking students to program UA's emergency number into their cell phones and to use that number in the event of an on-campus emergency. The number is 330-972-7123.

Here is why: The city of Akron's fire, police and EMS rely on UA police to help gain access to University buildings and to lead them to the right room. Thus, the city's emergency personnel need UA police to be present at the site of the problem when they arrive. This happens when calls come into the University's emergency line, but it doesn't always happen when 911 is dialed.

"When students use the UA emergency line, the emergency personnel from the city and the University are able to provide better service," said Corky Calderone, UA's director of environmental health and occupational safety.

If you are using a traditional phone on campus, dialing 911 will take you to the University's emergency switchboard. It is only with cell phones in which the 911 calls go straight to the city.

The University of Akron Health and Fitness Expo presented by Ritzman Pharmacies will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in UA's Athletic Field House.
The track area will be transformed into a cornucopia of fitness:
  • Meet world-class runners and fitness experts;
  • Watch the first-ever Zippy Mascot Relay (our money’s on Zippy), collect a bevy of samples of health-related products; and
  • Catch some enlightening speakers and lively demonstrations on the Expo stage.
Plus, if you have not seen the Field House, now is your chance to see this unique facility.

The expo, free and open to the public, is the kickoff to the Saturday, Oct. 1st, Akron Roadrunner Marathon. Whether you’re in shape for a marathon, or lucky to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, you’ll find something to cheer about at the Expo.

Free and anonymous HIV testing for UA students
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Student Health Services is pleased to announce that free, anonymous, on-campus HIV testing will be available on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Testing is by appointment only, and is available to UA students.

This is a fast, easy and free opportunity to get tested for HIV. It never hurts to get tested, especially if you are sexually active and not using protection consistently, or if you are sharing needles.

The OraSure test is a no-blood, no-needle test that takes only a few minutes. A trained professional gives the person getting tested an OraSure pad that is placed between cheek and gum, and rubbed back and forth until it is moist. The test is more than 99 percent accurate. Test results are back in one week.

You can remain anonymous. To make your anonymous/confidential appointment or if you have questions about the testing, call 330-972-7808. E-mail scheduling will not be accepted.

Health Services staff will need only your date of birth and the time you would like to be tested.

Summer 2006 Greece and London short-term study abroad informational meetings
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Next summer the College of Business Administration again will be offering two exciting short-term study abroad programs. The Greece program will be positioned as an introduction to study abroad for any major (as long as you have 48 credit hours earned by Summer II 2006), and the London program will be structured as more of a finishing program.

We will hold a combined general meeting to discuss both programs on Monday, September 26, from 4 to 5 p.m. in CBA 142 to give students general information on cost, precise courses offered and deadlines. That meeting will be repeated on Tuesday, September 27, from 4 to 5 p.m. in CBA 142, and on Wednesday, October 5, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Room 310.

The London program will occur during Summer I (5/15 – 6/17) and is aimed at upper level students (juniors and seniors) in business and other majors. The anticipated course offerings may include International Marketing (6600-385), International Business Practicum (6800-494), Special Topics: International Business (6800-494), and/or Independent Study: International Business (6100-499).

The Greece program will be offered during Summer II (6/19 – 7/22) and is aimed at late sophomore/very early junior students (48 credit hours completed before 6/19/06) of any major. Anticipated course offerings may include Marketing Principles (6600-300), International Business (6800-305), the Honors Colloquia in Humanities (1870-250) and Social Sciences (1870-360).

The purpose of these meetings is to provide students with enough information to decide which program will fit their studies the best during the summer of 2006. In October there will be meetings specifically devoted to the individual programs that will provide much more detail.

We encourage all interested students to attend one of these meetings. To see a description of last year's trips on the Web site, click on “additional information” below.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
