OBEN (Ohio Broadband Educational Network) is the University’s name for a discounted RoadRunner high-speed connection offered through Time Warner. This service is available to full- and part-time faculty and students taking credit courses, and full-time staff who reside in the Time Warner Cable Company’s service area. The monthly service fee is subject to change annually on Jan. 1. All OBEN customers must provide their own cable modem. Computer Solutions sells a Motorola cable modem for $72.

For students, the service costs $29.25 per month, but you must pay for all of the remaining months in the semester up front. For fall semester (three months, October through December, remaining ) the cost is $87.75. If you start the service part way through the semester, you only pay for the remaining months in that semester.

Reflections on the summer reading essay contest
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
More than 1,600 first-year students had the opportunity to hear author Nicholas Sparks speak about his book “Three Weeks with My Brother” at the Akron Civic Theatre last week. In his lecture, Mr. Sparks talked about the inspiration for his writing and the complexity of the writing process. We would like to continue the wave of enthusiasm created by Nicholas Sparks' lecture and encourage new students to express themselves through writing by entering the Reflections on the Summer Reading Essay Contest.

The contest is open to new students enrolled in classes for the first time in summer or fall 2005 only. Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.uakron.edu/nso/summerRead05.html. Contest deadline is October 28, 2005.

Winners will be recognized at the Reflections on the Summer Reading Recognition Event scheduled for December 1, 2005. Cash prizes ranging from $100 - $250 will be presented. In addition, winning essays will be published in the spring edition of AKROS, student literary publication.

Questions about the contest can be directed to Rebecca McDonald at ram7@uakron.edu or Lori Reinbolt at reinbolt@uakron.edu

Student Judicial Affairs recruitment and leadership
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron Office of Student Judicial Affairs is offering leadership opportunities for students. This semester, two different board positions are available to graduate and undergraduate students: the Student Judicial Advocacy Board and the Student Hearing Board. Each position offers a chance for students to become involved in the Judicial Affairs process.

The Student Judicial Advocacy Board serves as a guide for students who are involved in the Judicial Affairs process. Advocates will meet with the student and explain the conduct system. The purpose of the Student Judicial Advocate is not to advise the student as to the best course of action, but rather to serve as a resource to the student. A one-hour training session is required in order to participate in this exciting program.

Student Hearing Board members continue to be an important part of the Judicial Affairs Process here on campus. The board members are directly involved in the hearing board’s decision-making process, which differs from the role of Student Judicial Advocates. Student Hearing Board members become involved only when the formal hearing board is convened. Board members attend hearings, consider evidence and determine what/if disciplinary action is appropriate. Student Hearing Board members will be required to attend a two-hour training session in order to participate in the program.

To become involved in one or both of these programs, please e-mail Dale Adams, graduate assistant for Student Judicial Affairs, at sugradasst2@uakron.edu. Please reply by September 30, 2005.

From the student government president: Welcome!

spacer image
It is my pleasure to welcome you to The University of Akron. It is an exciting time to be a student at the University, as our landscape for learning is nearly complete and we move into the future. It is time for you to leave your mark on campus.

As a student, I understand the importance of balancing your academic and social life. Therefore, I would like to personally invite you to some of our extracurricular events this fall.

• Dance – Homecoming Dance, October 21, 8 p.m., at the Student Union.

• Football - Akron vs. Central Michigan, 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Rubber Bowl

These are just a few activities offered this fall. For a complete listing of the events taking place on campus please view The University of Akron Events Calendar.

Being involved is a valuable resource and a great way to make new friends. The University of Akron has over 200 student organizations offering you many great opportunities in which to get involved. Feel free to stop in the Source on the first floor of the Student Union to get more information.

Attending college is a very exciting time in your life. I would like to take this opportunity to recommend a book that I found useful as a freshman, “Doing Honest Work in College,” by Charles Lipson. This book will help guide you through the proper ways to prepare citations, avoid plagiarism, and achieve academic success. This book is available at the campus bookstore. The University of Akron takes academic integrity very seriously. For more information about University policies and the Student Code of Conduct please visit the Student Judicial Affairs website.

Again, it is my pleasure to welcome you to The University of Akron. I hope to see you around campus.

Sincerely,

Diana Kingsbury
ASG President

Rocking for a reason with Alpha Phi Alpha Oct. 3 - Oct. 7
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Most of us have seen the horrific images of the destruction that was left behind as Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf, displacing thousands and leaving vast amounts of damage. It’s often a tragedy that tests our strength as a nation and prompts us to join together to make it through an unthinkable event.

The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Alpha Tau chapter, invite you to assist us as we band together in brotherhood to take a small step in a large effort to help those displaced by the hurricane.

Each year, the brothers of Alpha Tau brave the elements and sacrifice their mornings, afternoons and nights to keep a rocking chair moving non-stop for the Reginald Vincent White Rock-A-Thon. In honoring this chapter tradition, the brothers test their will, but more importantly, the Rock-A-Thon funds a scholarship for a local high school student.

This year, however, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to those displaced by the hurricane. A scholarship will be given away at a later date. In addition to money, we are accepting donations of clothing, canned or boxed foods and toiletries.

We will get things rocking outside the Student Union at midnight Monday, October 3. Collection efforts, along with rocking, will cease at midnight Friday, October 7. The brothers challenge and urge you, your family and friends, clubs and organizations, fraternities and sororities, and the faculty and staff of The University of Akron to lend us your support. Make a difference with the Ice Cold Brothers of Alpha.

Thank you in advance for your time and participation. If you have further questions, contact Andre Smith at 330-962-6757.
