Woodcut exhibition opens; panel discussion planned Nov. 7 - Dec. 2
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
“Mirror of the Wood: A Century of the Woodcut Print in Finland” is an exhibition that evokes the aura of Finland–a place of pristine forests and lakes–distilled into a love of naturalness and aesthetic sophistication in the 70 prints by 39 artists that span 100 years. The exhibition opens on Nov. 7 at the Emily Davis Gallery in The University of Akron's Myers School of Art . Karen Kunc of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is the curator of the exhibition, which is organized around four themes: mythical narrative, reflections on social life, nature, and wood as material and content. An opening reception will be held on Monday, Nov. 7, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the gallery atrium (Folk Hall, 150 E. Exchange St.).

In conjunction with the exhibition, a panel of printmaking professionals will discuss the relevance of the woodcut in contemporary art and the role of printmaking today on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Folk Hall. On hand will be Margaret Denk-Leigh, Adjunct Faculty, Cleveland Institute of Art; Liz Maugans, Zygote Press, Cleveland; Noel Reifel, Associate Professor of Art, Kent State University; and Associate Professor Hui-Chu Ying and Assistant Professor Charles Beneke (panel moderator), Myers School of Art, The University of Akron.

Additionally, an exchange of both faculty and artists’ portfolios from northeast Ohio and students’ portfolios from the Myers School of Art, Kent State University, Cleveland Institute of Art and Cleveland State University will be on display.

The Myers exhibition closes on Dec. 2. Gallery hours are M/T/F/S 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and W/Th 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sunday. Call 330.972.5951 for more information, or e-mail dwatt@uakron.edu.
