Some Dell laptop battery packs are being recalled

Dell is recalling some of its batteries that can overheat and could pose the risk of fire. Dell is 99.9 percent confident that The University of Akron has not purchased any laptops with the recalled batteries. However, as a safeguard, the Information Technology Services department at UA suggests that you follow the instructions below to check your battery against the recall list. Also, if you purchased your laptop directly from Dell, you should check your battery using the process below. Dell is offering free replacements.

Potentially affected batteries were sold with the following computer models, sold separately as secondary batteries, or were provided in response to service calls :
  • Latitude D410, D505, D510, D600, D610, D800, D810
  • Inspiron 510M, 600M, 6000, 8600, 9200, 9300, XPS Gen 2
  • Precision M20, M70
The batteries were shipped to customers between Oct. 5, 2004 and Oct. 13, 2005. The words "DELL" and "Made in Japan" or "Made in China" are printed on the back of the batteries.

A TWO-STEP PROCESS

There is a two-step process to determine if your battery is being recalled.

Step one: Verify that your battery is one of the following model numbers. These numbers are printed on the back of the battery. You will need to remove the battery from the laptop to find this number. Help in locating the number is available at the Dell recall Web site.

Battery Part Numbers
  • 3K590
  • C5340
  • X5308
  • F5132
  • U5882
  • U5867
  • 6P922
  • C5446
  • C2603
Step two: Even if your battery part number is listed, your individual battery may not be recalled. To confirm that status of your battery, you must go to the Dell "battery identification" page and enter the entire 20-digit battery number.

The Dell recall page can also be accessed from the Computer Solutions home page.

If your battery is being recalled, Dell will provide you with instructions. However, you can also return the battery to Electronic Repair in the Lincoln Building, Room 103. For tracking purposes, if your battery is recalled, please notify Electronic Repair at dellbattery@uakron.edu.

NOTE: If your battery is being recalled, do not use it. Batteries subject to recall should not be used while awaiting a replacement battery pack from Dell. You may continue to use your notebook computer using the AC adapter power cord originally provided with your notebook.

For information about the recall, you can contact Dell Customer Service directly at 1-866-342-0011.
