Parking becomes tighter on south side of campus
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Parking is less abundant on the south side of campus as construction crews have begun to build a 460-bed residence hall on East Exchange Street in front of Gallucci Hall.

Portions of two lots are closed: the front of Lot 46 (also known as the Gallucci lot) and the fenced-in portion of Lot 47 (by Folk Hall). (Sections of both lots, however, remain open.) On the Web: A map showing the closed-off areas (in orange).

Lot 47 behind Folk Hall is being reconfigured to create about 40 new spaces; however, the wet weather in recent weeks has forced delays in the project. The work will be completed as soon as possible. Plus, the University is attempting to lease nearby space for parking, but an agreement with the landowners remains elusive.

Parking Services encourages students to consider parking on the east side of campus, where lots are generally underused, especially the East Campus Parking Deck (Lot 1) and Lot 9 near Wallaroo residence hall. A list of the lots on campus is here.

Residents of Gallucci Hall and Grant Residence Center, which are located near the closed lots, will receive additional recommendations regarding parking.

You are encouraged to check your spring 2006 schedules by clicking on the ZipLine button located in the lower-right corner of The University of Akron’s home page and logging in with your UANet ID and password. Click on the “Students” tab, select “Academics” from the list and then select “View My Class Schedule.” Information regarding course-meeting times, days and room location is given in real-time; in other words, all information is up to date as it is retrieved.

The Office of the University Registrar will send e-mail to enrolled students' UANet e-mail addresses when classroom changes occur for their courses. It is recommended that students check their UANet e-mail often for any important messages from the University as this will be the official means of notification used by the Office of the University Registrar.

Simmons Hall – lobby
Student Union – laptop check-out and kiosks
Residence Halls – computer labs
Carroll Hall – Adult Focus Office, Room 55

More than one billion cards will be sent for Valentine's Day this year, but for those of you who strive for originality, consider treating your Valentine to an evening of delectable food, great music and fun by attending the "Hearts for Hurricane Relief" benefit dinner-dance from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the Student Union Ballroom. The event – open to all members of the University community and their significant others – is being coordinated by Akron-AAUP, the Executive Committee of Faculty Senate and the Provost's Office.

Cost is $25 per person, with the proceeds going to:
  • help defray the transportation costs for a group of UA students who will travel to the Gulf Coast over spring break to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity; and
  • the American Red Cross' relief fund for victims on the Golf Coast. The evening will include live jazz and big band music, courtesy of a faculty combo led by Jack Schantz of UA's School of Music.

The menu includes horseradish caper-crusted pork loin; coriander-crusted beef with sauces (cherry brandy, tarragon Dijon, Jack Daniels demi-glaze with mushrooms); tortellini, ravioli and penne pasta with artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, olives, roasted peppers and fresh garlic with sauces; Greek salad; and of course, chocolate! A Chocolate Lovers' Fountain will entice you to dip your choice of fresh fruit, cream puffs and marshmallows. A cash bar and coffees will be offered as well.

"This will be an event that brings together the University community for the benefit of those affected along the Gulf Coast," said Elizabeth Stroble, UA's provost and chief operating officer.

Reservations will be required. Instructions on how to do that will be coming shortly, but save the date now!
