Financial Aid Processing for 2006-2007
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Office of Student Financial Aid and Student Employment reminds all students who would like to be considered for Perkins Loans, Nursing Loans, College Work Study and Supplemental Grants that they MUST have their 2006-2007 FAFSA mailed/confirmed online to the Department of Education by March 1 to ensure consideration for these awards. The FAFSA Web site is http://www.ed.gov.

Summer Aid Applications for 2006 will be available March 1, 2006 in the Simmons Hall lobby, as well as, downloadable from our Web site at http://www.uakron.edu/finaid.

Students MUST have both a Summer Aid Application AND a 2006-2007 FAFSA on file with the Office of Student Financial Aid and Student Employment in order to receive aid for the summer. The deadline to submit Summer Aid Applications is June 9, 2006.

Parking becomes tighter on south side of campus
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Parking is less abundant on the south side of campus as construction crews have begun to build a 460-bed residence hall on East Exchange Street in front of Gallucci Hall.

Portions of two lots are closed: the front of Lot 46 (also known as the Gallucci lot) and the fenced-in portion of Lot 47 (by Folk Hall). (Sections of both lots, however, remain open.) On the Web: A map showing the closed-off areas (in orange).

Lot 47 behind Folk Hall is being reconfigured to create about 40 new spaces; however, the wet weather in recent weeks has forced delays in the project. The work will be completed as soon as possible. Plus, the University is attempting to lease nearby space for parking, but an agreement with the landowners remains elusive.

Parking Services encourages students to consider parking on the east side of campus, where lots are generally underused, especially the East Campus Parking Deck (Lot 1) and Lot 9 near Wallaroo residence hall. A list of the lots on campus is here.

ITS adds new technique to spam fighting tools Jan. 20 - Jan. 27
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A dramatic reduction in the amount of spam reaching your inbox is the result of a new blocking technique implemented by Internet & Sever Systems. The new technique works by refusing messages from systems that do not conform to accepted protocols, instead of applying spam classifications to individual messages.

This new approach blocks much of the spam and other nuisance e-mail at the point of entry. It has resulted in about an 80% drop in the number of messages processed by the spam and virus scanners. However, the technique will not block all spam. As such, ITS will continue additional spam and virus scanning efforts.

While the technique is highly effective in blocking spam, ITS does not expect that any good messages will be blocked.

If you have questions, contact Internet & Server Systems at 330-972-7968, keith@uakron.edu.

The third annual UA LEADS leadership development series begins on Wednesday, January 25, at 4 p.m. in Student Union Room 312.

We are pleased to announce that our opening speaker is our President, Dr. Luis Proenza. This is a great opportunity to meet Dr. Proenza as he shares information on his leadership journey and his thoughts on effective leadership. It will be an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas--a great time to interact with our President in a smaller group setting.

UA LEADS is an eight-session educational opportunity to discuss principles of effective leadership and to assist you in defining your leadership style. It also is an opportunity to meet other students interested in campus and community involvement.

Students who participate in 6 of 8 sessions will be recognized at the L.I.F.E. Awards ceremony on April 13.

To get the complete schedule for UA LEADS, contact: lead@uakron.edu; call 330-972-7002 or stop by the SOuRCe desk in Student Union 130.

"Fried Chicken & Latkes," a one-woman experience based on the life of actress Rain Pryor, daughter of late comedian Richard Pryor, comes to the Akron Civic Theatre Friday, Feb. 3, at 8 p.m. Told through song and characters, Pryor’s story takes the audience on a journey of racial identity, family, career, spiritual growth and love.

Born to a white go-go dancer and comedian Richard Pryor, Rain grew up as a black and Jewish girl in Beverly Hills. It’s these two very different cultures, each defined not only by race and religion, but also by class and lifestyle, that drive Pryor’s story. Her versatile skills as a story weaver, singer, mime, mimic, comedienne and dancer give the audience a glimpse into the universe of her life filled with poignant and hilarious twists and turns.

This show is presented by The University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall and is part of the Beyond Broadway 2005-2006 season. A $2 discount on tickets is available with a valid Zip Card ID.

Please note: This show contains strong language and adult themes.
