This is the first regularly scheduled Sociology Club meeting of the Spring 2006 semester. In addition to an introduction to the club, we will be watching a video "How Biased Are You?" This video examines both extreme forms of racism, such as slavery and hate crimes, and more common forms of racism and bias that influence everyday life. One valuable element of this film is that it uses hidden camera footage to demonstrate how different the realities are for white and black people in the same situations.

We invite the campus community to come share in our discussion of this continuing problem in our society.

Computer artist and game-hack guru to speak at Folk Hall Feb. 3

Cory Arcangel is a computer artist whose work is concerned with technology's relationship to culture and the creative process. On Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at 6 p.m., Arcangel will lecture in the auditorium of Folk Hall, in the Myers School of Art. His lecture title is “How I Went from Modifying Nintendo Games to Giving Lectures about Simon and Garfunkel”. Arcangel explains that “My work is inspired by and functions as a means to understand my own media-saturated existence. Since the present and future is filtered through the past, my work with digital media technology is directly informed by my time spent with the likes of television, music, video games, and early Macintosh computers.” In Akron, Arcangel will discuss his recent work which he says “involves issues with new media in relation to exhibition, web 2, ‘links’, Eddie Van Halen, Starbucks, and California.” The lecture is funded by the Myers Artist in Residence Program, and is free and open to the public – seating is limited.

Arcangel is a founding member of BEIGE, a group of computer programmers and enthusiasts who recycle obsolete computers and video game systems to make art and music and create new meanings. As part of the Emily Davis Gallery’s “Outside the Box: New Cinematic Experiences” exhibition at UA which runs Jan. 18 – Feb. 24, two of Arcangel’s game hacks are on display: Super Mario Clouds v2k3 and I Shot Andy Warhol.

Student Health Services is pleased to announce that free, anonymous, on-campus HIV testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13. Testing is by appointment only, and is available to all UA students.

Tests can be anonymous or confidential. You can return in one week for your results. This is a fast, easy and free opportunity to get tested for HIV. It never hurts to get tested, especially if you are sexually active and not using protection or if you are sharing needles.

The OraSure test is a no-blood, no-needle test that only takes a few minutes. A trained professional gives the person getting tested an OraSure pad that is placed between cheek and gum, and rubbed back and forth until it is moist. The test is more than 99 percent accurate.

To make an anonymous or confidential appointment, or if you have questions about the testing, please call Health Services at 330-972-7808. E-mail scheduling will not be accepted. Health Services staff will just need your birth date and the time you would like to be tested.

The English Language Institute (ELI), UA's English program for international students, invites UA students to participate in its Conversation Partners Program. Through this program, the ELI pairs an international student who is learning English in our program with an American partner for one hour of informal conversation per week. ELI students come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of educational, political, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. This program is a wonderful opportunity to learn about another country and culture, and to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron.

Sign up starts NOW, so come join in the fun through the ELI!
