The Office of Student Financial Aid and Student Employment would like to remind all students who would like to be considered for Perkins Loans, Nursing Loans, College Work Study and Supplemental Grants that they MUST have their 2006-2007 FAFSA mailed/confirmed online to the Department of Education by March 1 to ensure consideration for these awards. The FAFSA website is http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Summer Aid Applications for 2006 will be available March 1, 2006 in the Simmons Hall lobby, as well as, downloadable from here.

Students MUST have both a Summer Aid Application AND a 2006-2007 FAFSA on file with the Office of Student Financial Aid and Student Employment in order to receive aid for the summer. The deadline to submit Summer Aid Applications is June 9, 2006.

The University Of Akron Board Of Trustees is accepting applications for nominations to the position of Student Trustee. The Term for the position is July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2007.

Applicant requirements:
  • Applicant must be officially enrolled as a student in a minimum of six (6) credit hours, at the time of application. The student must be able to fulfill a two-year term as a Student Trustee before undergraduate graduation or must intend to continue on as a graduate student of the University, throughout the term of office. Furthermore, graduate students must be able to serve the full two-year term before leaving the University.

  • Applicant must make satisfactory progress toward an academic degree by completing a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per academic year. Note: This clause does not apply to graduate students.

  • Applicant must maintain a satisfactory academic cumulative grade point of 2.0 or better if an undergraduate or law student, or a 3.0 or better if a graduate student.

  • Applicant must be in good standing with the University.
Five names will be selected and submitted to the President of the University, who will forward them to the Governor of the State of Ohio for final appointment decisions.

The Office of Leadership and Development is seeking students to serve as interns for the Oelschlager Summer Leadership Institute. The Institute is designed to assist high school students in developing their leadership skills and to encourage them to pursue a college degree.

Benefits for interns include paid room and board (for the summer), a $3,000 stipend and great experience facilitating discussions and applying leadership theory!!

Interns must: be currently enrolled students, have at least a 2.8 GPA and have completed 48 credit hours. All interns must also be enrolled in the fall 2006 semester.

The internship period is July to December 2006. All interns MUST be available for the following dates:
June 26-28
July 6-15
July 22-29

The University Libraries will once again be running the Food for Fines program during the month of March. This benefits the Akron-Canton Food Bank during the Harvest for Hunger drive. Students, staff and faculty with late fines may bring in non-perishable food items and receive one dollar's worth of credit toward their fines for every food item received. Sorry, this offer cannot be used to pay for lost or unreturned materials. There is no limit on how many food items a patron may bring in. The library will be accepting food from March 1 to March 31. Food may be brought to the Circulation Department or Audio Visual Services at Bierce Library, to the Science and Technology Library in Auburn Science Center or to the Law Library. Most needed items include peanut butter, tuna fish, soap, infant formula and canned vegetables. The library cannot accept damaged or outdated food items in exchange for fines.

On Saturday, February 25, 2006 the Ocasek Natatorium will host the MAC Meet and on Saturday, March 4, 2006 the Northeast Ohio YMCA Swim League Championship Meet from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. During that time the Ocasek Natatorium will be closed. There will not be access to the pool, racquetball courts, dryland training room, free weight areas or the second floor fitness area. The Student Recreation and Wellness Center will open at 8 a.m.; participants may use the SRWC during that time. The natatorium will open Sunday at noon.

Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honorary will be hosting a speech competition. Participants can compete using either an informative or persuasive speech. This competition is open to all students in any major. Novas and advanced speakers are encouraged to participate! The Ashton Scholarship will be awarded to the winners of both categories. The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.
