To our students:

I want to make you aware of some recent incidents involving UA students and what we are doing about them.

There have been several incidents of alleged rape or sexual assault on or near campus in recent weeks. In one incident, a University of Akron student reported a rape off-campus to the Akron Police Department last month. In that off-campus incident, the suspect was arrested immediately and charged. The other cases were unrelated incidents in which students reported being sexually assaulted by an acquaintance on campus. My department continues to investigate those cases, even though charges have not been filed.

We are committed to campus safety, and that includes letting you know as soon as possible if a threat to your safety exists. None of these situations represented an immediate threat to the campus community that warranted a bulletin such as we have issued in the past. My department aggressively investigates all reports of sexual assault and follows the required reporting procedures precisely. If you feel that you have been the victim of a sexual assault, please contact my department at 330-972-7123 or the University’s Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Services Team online at http://www.uakron.edu/studentaff/ServicesTeam/index.php.

For your personal safety, the University offers educational programs, counseling services, self-defense training, campus escorts and a visible police presence. You can learn more about these services by contacting: Health Services at 330-972-7808 about educational programs; the Counseling, Testing and Career Center at 330-972-7082 or http://www3.uakron.edu/counseling/; or University Police at 330-972-7123 or http://www3.uakron.edu/police/home.htm.

Here are some general personal safety tips to keep in mind:
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings.
  • Walk on lighted walkways.
  • Don't take shortcuts in unfamiliar areas.
  • Follow the rules regarding building and residence hall access.
  • Use the buddy system. If no buddies are available, then use the Campus Patrol. Members of the patrol will escort you to and from campus locations for free between 5 p.m. and midnight daily. Call 330-972-7263 to request an escort. Details.
  • Approach your car at an angle and have your keys in your hand.
  • Make sure that you keep your vehicle locked at all times.
  • Know the location of the emergency phones on your daily path. There are over 200 on campus. They are easily
  • identified by their blue lights. Dial 911 and your call will go directly to campus police.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain view within your vehicle or anywhere else unattended.
  • At a party remember the rule: Leave the party with the same person or people that you came with.
  • At a party, do not leave your drink unattended and then come back to drink it. Get rid of it.
  • When going out in a group, designate someone to stay sober so that he or she can keep an eye out for the group.
  • Report suspicious circumstances to the University Police.
Additional campus safety information is here.

If my department can ever be of assistance to you, please call 330-972-7123.
