The Payroll Office has discovered that staff and student payroll checks dated today (March 17) and distributed between 8 and 9:30 a.m. this morning have a problem that will cause banks to decline them from being cashed or deposited. Any checks picked up by a staff or student this morning should be returned to the Payroll Office for a replacement check.

Paychecks for graduate students are okay and do not have to be returned.

Please contact the Payroll Office at 330-972-7205 if you have any questions.

Photojournalist to offer perspective on Hurricane Katrina March 20
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
For the past 25 years, New Orleans photojournalist Donn Young has chronicled life in his culturally rich city. Nothing could have prepared him for the calamity that devastated much of the Gulf Coast last August. At the Myers School of Art, photographer Donn Young will present “40 Days 40 Nights” on Mon., March 20, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Folk Hall (150 E. Exchange St., Akron). The lecture is free and open to the public (seating is limited). The presentation puts into perspective what has happened to New Orleans and its hundreds of thousands of citizens displaced by America’s worst natural disaster. The story is put into context by showing pre-Katrina pictures of the city and its people, with emphasis on business leaders, home owners, artists and musicians.

Young has been selected to work creatively with the Louisiana State Museum in curating a one-year anniversary exhibition of Hurricane Katrina. His photography has been deemed “historically significant” by Louisiana State University and the Records Management Association of America. As such, LSU has mandated the salvaging and restoration of Young’s storm-damaged archive of 1.35 million images.

Maverick media artist and UA grad to lecture at Folk Hall March 24

Patrick Lichty, a University of Akron graduate, describes himself as a “technologically based conceptual artist, writer and curator.” On Friday, March 24, Lichty will visit the Myers School of Art to deliver his lecture Confessions of a Culture Hacker: Probes, Pranks, and Investigations. A reception will follow the lecture, which is free and open to the public (seating is limited). Lichty's better-known media pranks as animator for RTMark and The Yes Men use mass-media production techniques to help create an air of believability for bombastic concepts that mirror the artist’s view of the equally ridiculous practices of the corporate interests he parodies.

In 2000, Lichty won the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s New Media/New Century Award for SPRAWL: The American Landscape in Transition, an online multimedia documentary examining the issues of urban sprawl in Northeast Ohio. Currently he is creating a large sculptural work that examines tensions caused by today’s society of surveillance, codes and information hidden by technology and the formal nature of digital art itself. Lichty, from the Akron/Canton area, is currently a doctorate candidate at Bowling Green State University.

Soledad O’Brien co-anchors CNN’s flagship morning program American Morning with Miles O’Brien. Based in New York, she joined CNN in July 2003 and has attracted new viewers to the show as well as securing exclusive interviews from around the world.

O’Brien covered the London terrorist attacks in July 2005 with live reports from the region. She was among a handful of CNN anchors sent to Puhket Thailand in December 2004 to cover the disaster and aftermath of the tsunami that took more than 155,000 lives. Her coverage of the tsunami in South Asia contributed to the awarding of an Alfred I. duPont Award to CNN. She reported from Columbus, Ohio, on the late count of Ohio’s contested electoral votes in the Presidential election of 2004. Earlier that year she reported on the burial ceremony of Yasser Arafat. O’Brien was selected as the only broadcast journalist to travel with First Lady Laura Bush on her trip to Moscow in the fall of 2003.
