Dear campus community,

The Teaching and Technology Research Group of the Institute for Teaching & Learning is asking for your participation in a technology survey. The information gathered through this survey will be used to help assess and meet the increasing and evolving technology needs of our campus community.

As a thank you for taking the survey, you will have an opportunity, at the completion of the survey, to enter a drawing for a free 30G video iPod.

We ask that you complete the survey by Friday, April 7th, 2006. Please only complete the survey once and understand that your responses will remain anonymous to the ITL Teaching and Technology Research Group.

The winner of the iPod will be notified via University email address.

The survey is designed to work best on a PC using Internet Explorer or on a Macintosh using Firefox. While taking the survey please use the navigation buttons located in the survey; do not use your browser navigation buttons.

INFORMED CONSENT for The Technology, Teaching, and Learning Survey

RESEARCH PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURES: University of Akron students, professors, and teaching staff are eligible to participate. The purpose of this Teacher and Student Technology Use Survey is to gain a better understanding of what technology is used for teaching and learning purposes at The University of Akron (both on- and off-campus locations). We are also interested in determining whether there are relationships between student and teacher technology use and success in college. Participating in this survey will take approximately 15 minutes of your time. If you decide to participate in this study by clicking on the link below, you will move to a 2-Way Survey website and survey questions will appear.

TIME COMMITMENT: This survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

RISKS AND DISCOMFORTSM: There are no known risks or discomforts associated with this research.

BENEFITS: By taking part in this survey, you may help us obtain a better understanding of the types of technology used in teaching and learning at The University of Akron. Your participation may also help us determine what types of technology are associated with positive outcomes.

COMPENSATION: At the end of this survey, you will have an option to enter your University ID number into a drawing for a video I-pod (30 gig version). There will be two I-pods given away, but each person is eligible to win just one. It is important to note, though, that your survey responses will not be connected to your University ID. The only purpose for obtaining your University ID number is so that you can be contacted if you win a video I-pod.

ALTERNATIVES: Not applicable.

CONSENT:

I have been fully informed of the above-described survey with its possible benefits and risks. I understand that my responses will be maintained in a confidential manner by the researcher. I voluntarily give permission for my participation in this study by beginning the web survey. I know that the investigators and his/her associates will be available to answer any questions that I may have. If, at any time, I feel my questions have not been adequately answered, I may request to speak with Dr. Philip Allen (330-972-6177) or the Interim Director of Research Services of the University of Akron (Ms. Sharon McWhorter, 330-972-6764, or toll free, 1-888-232-8790). I understand that I am free to withdraw this consent and discontinue participation in this project at any time without penalty.

UAAL adult learners to meet April 3 - April 11

spacer image
The dates in April for meetings of the UAAL are Monday, April 3 and Tuesday April 11. Both meetings will be held at the Spaghetti Warehouse in Akron. Many members have requested a relaxing dinner meeting after the stress of mid-terms. Dinner choices are being taken at 5 p.m. on both dates. I would suggest arriving at 4:30 to look over the menu and make your choices.

These meetings are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT because we will be nominating individuals for the four officer positions that are all open for the 2006-2007 term. The positions open are: president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. You are free to nominate others or volunteer for an officer position. Exactly how we will cast our votes will be explained at the meeting.

If you are interested in attending either dinner meeting, R.S.V.P. to mas70@uakron.edu before March 29. The restaurant needs a count for reservations. Our meetings have been exciting with much input from everyone. Please attend this meeting also because we need more input than ever.

The Department of Sociology is hosting its eighth-annual Career Options for Sociology Majors on Tuesday, April 4, from 1 until 2:30 p.m. in the Student Union 312. Five department alumni are forming a discussion panel to answer audience questions about careers for Sociology majors in the fields of marketing, adult probation, health care and the government. Guests are invited to attend any time throughout the 90-minute session.

This is a wonderful opportunity for majors to focus their futures and for undeclared students to learn about the pluses of a major or minor in Sociology. We ask, therefore, that faculty encourage students to attend this informative event.
