The University of Akron Press has published "The Book of Accident," a series of poetry by author Beckian Fritz Goldberg.

The series of poems are an immersion into a shadowy atmosphere with many strange images, such as the "black mother of black trees" and hummingbirds becoming a "fistful of violet amphetamines." The Book of Accident is like entering a graphic novel with missing panels, a world of feral adolescents, giving the sense of "a world where no one has to love you."

This is Goldberg's fifth published book. Some of her previous works included "Body Betrayer" (1991), "In the Badlands of Desire" (1993) and "Never Be the Horse" (1999).

She also is a winner of The University of Akron Poetry Prize selected by Thomas Lux. Other awards she has received include the Theodore Roethke Poetry Prize, The Gettysburg Review Annual Poetry Award and a Pushcart Prize.

Don’t forget— Current students, faculty, staff and alumni receive a 20 percent discount!

Author Deborah A. Symonds, in “Notorious Murders, Black Lanterns, And Moveable Goods,” explores the “shadow economy” of petty theft, thievery, and murder in the Old Town district of Edinburgh, Scotland, in the early 19th century.

The book, published by The University of Akron Press, examines the profession of “entrepreneurial criminal,” focusing particularly on William Burke and William Hare and their wives for their 1828 murders of almost 20 of the city’s poor, and selling the bodies.

Symonds also describes young thieves ransacking warehouses for tea, women pretending to be prostitutes lifting men’s watches, and fine linens disappearing from clotheslines. She contends that the trade of thievery, far from being either static or a symptom of misery and sign of revolt, was a very lively economic sector, the freest market of all, and one that shifted and shadowed the larger legitimate economy.

Symonds, an associate professor of history at Drake University, has bachelor’s degrees in English literature and European history from Bennington College, a master’s degree in Scottish literature from the University of Edinburgh, and master’s and doctorate degrees in European and American women’s history from Binghamton University.

Don't Forget--Students, Staff, & Faculty receive a 20% discount when they purchase directly through the University of Akron Press!
