The Department of Student Financials understands the challenges that students face when it comes to paying for college. The department, located on the first floor of Simmons Hall, is happy to explain to you the available payment options, including the installment-payment plan. Stop by or call us at 330-972-5100. We are also accessible on the Web at http://www.uakron.edu/busfin/studentfin/index.php .

We want to make you aware of some important dates for the fall term.

Tuition and fee payment is due on August 8 for students who enrolled prior to July 7. You can pay in installments over the semester by signing up for our installment payment plan. Information on the plan is available here.

Information on financial aid is available at: http://www.uakron.edu/administration/StudentAffairs/financialAid , or you can call 330-972-7032 or stop by the Office of Student Financial Aid in Simmons Hall.

Some additional points:

• Anticipated financial aid is considered as payment, and if it covers the balance due, the student will not incur any penalties.

• Accounts not paid by the August 8 due date will be assessed a $50 late fee. Students who miss the due date and have not signed up for the installment plan run the risk of having their enrollment canceled for the fall term. The cancellation enables the University to open up seats in classes that are full.

• Students who enroll but later decide not to attend are strongly encouraged to drop their classes to ensure that fees are properly credited. Please note: Nonpayment does not guarantee the cancellation of your enrollment. (Learn how to drop classes here . The University’s refund policy is here: http://www.uakron.edu/busfin/studentfin/refundpolicy.php.)

• Enrollment will be canceled on August 13 for all undergraduate students if no payment is made on their account (or if the student has not signed up for financial aid) by the due date of August 8.

• Enrollment will be canceled on September 4 for all undergraduate students if the account has not been paid by the due date. Enrollment after July 7 will have a due date of August 28, and all enrollment after August 28 is due on the date of registration.

Students intending to reside on campus who fail to make the payment due date will have their housing contracts canceled and rooms forfeited if their classes are canceled. Should these students reinstate their housing contract after making payment arrangements, they may be moved to the wait list for housing and assigned when space becomes available.

• Graduate students, law students, first-time international students and certain workshops are excluded from the above criteria. Please contact your college for more specific information.

If you have any questions, please call us at 330-972-5100 or visit Simmons Hall.

At that time, you will be able to sign up to receive OBEN.

To see if you are in Time Warner’s service area, go to http://www.twcusoon.com and enter your zip code. If you are in the new service area, you will be redirected to a “Welcome” screen. If there is no change to your service area, you will be notified.

Jumpstart seeks to break reading record Aug. 24
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
I’m writing to share with you a really exciting campaign Ithat ’m part of at work--it’s called Jumpstart’s Read for the Record!

I have been a part of Jumpstart at The University of Akron for the past 3 years, working as the Site Manager. Jumpstart is a national non-profit that partners with higher-ed institutions to utilize college students in building literacy skills among at-risk preschoolers in the surrounding community. With this new national campaign, Read for the Record, we will set the world record for the number of children being read the same book – "The Little Engine That Could" – in a single day on August 24, 2006. That event will build awareness throughout the country about the power of early education and directly and symbolically support the potential of our youngest citizens. (We’re even going to appear on the Today Show on August 24!)

Through my work with Jumpstart at The University of Akron, I am able to directly impact part of the 10,000 children in 22 states each year that Jumpstart touches building the vital literacy, social and emotional skills children need to thrive. High quality early education for children has been shown to increase graduation rates and lower negative outcomes such as being convicted of a violent crime.

As powerful as this experience has been for me, even more amazing is that this transformational experience is duplicated thousands of times each day in Jumpstart programs across America.

I hope you will get involved in Jumpstart’s READ FOR THE RECORD to support my work and to connect in the same way with a child in your life. There are many ways to be involved...

Here are just a few ways:
  • Visit www.readfortherecord.org to register to read with a child in your life on August 24 at one of many national events, at a local library, in a participating Starbucks store near you, or register your own event.
  • Special-edition copies of The Little Engine That Could will be available in Starbucks stores everywhere starting August 1.
  • Buy a copy of the book for a child in need through Jumpstart's Read for the Record Web site. Many Jumpstart children don't have books on their shelves and you can provide one by donating online.
or just SPREAD THE WORD!!

Jumpstart-Akron will host an event in Akron from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 at the Starbucks in Summit Mall Bring a child to read to and join us for some interactive storytelling of "The Little Engine That Could!"

I know you receive plenty of e-mails every day so I appreciate your taking the time to read this, and I sincerely hope you’ll join me in this exciting children's literacy campaign.

Thank you,
Catherine M. Cutlip, site manager
