Police seeking assistance after laptops are stolen

A series of laptop thefts have occurred on campus in recent days, and UA Police are asking for your help in solving the crimes.

The stolen laptops do not contain personal information about UA students or personnel, police say.

The suspect in each incident has been described as a black male, clean-shaven, medium build, about 6 feet tall and in his late 20s or early 30s. Each time he was spotted wearing a baseball cap or visor. He is bald or has closely cropped hair.

Police would like to talk with him about four laptop thefts in the past two weeks; one was taken from Rhodes Arena, one from the College of Business Administration and two from Knight Chemical Laboratory. In Knight Chemical, the suspect broke a window in a door to gain entry to a lab where the laptops were located. In the other incidents, the laptops were unattended in unlocked offices. Each incident occurred between noon and 7 p.m.

Captain Alan Grad of the UA Police Department recommends that laptop users not leave their computers unattended for any period of time. “That’s a good rule any time, but particularly in the summer, when there are fewer people on campus,” he said.

If you have more information about these incidents, or if you spot someone out of place or acting suspiciously, please call the UA Police at 330-972-7123.

Lot 22, located between the Honors Complex and Bulger Hall, will be closed Friday morning through Sunday to allow workers to seal and restripe the surface. When the lot reopens Monday, it will remain for use by drivers with disabilities only; a state-issued placard must be displayed to park there. Poor weather may delay the project.

On the Web: A map showing Lot 22.
