Everyone should exercise caution when receiving e-mails appearing to come from banks, PayPal, eBay, credit unions, etc., that request confidential information. This common practice of obtaining private information through deceptive and illicit means is known as phishing and is frequently used for the purpose of identity theft.

If you receive such an e-mail message – delete it. If you think it may be valid, contact the organization by phone and verify the legitimacy of the message. The University mail scanner will also assist in the detection of phishing messages. Note in this example, the blue text indicates the link in the email message while the red text indicates the actual location that this link points to. The mail scanner recognized that the text for the link and the site the link points to do NOT match – and a warning is displayed to alert you.

To learn more about phishing scams, including what to look for, identifying scams, protecting yourself, and what to do should you become a victim, log in to ZipLine and access the two-part course on Phishing located under the heading “Cyber Security Information”.

To register, contact Sue McKibben at 330-972-6391 or smf@uakron.edu.

College Republicans offer public screening of United 93 Sept. 11

spacer image
The College Republicans are hosting United 93 for all UA students!

Directed and written by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, Bloody Sunday), this grippingly honest, unflinching and profoundly moving film salutes the heroism of the 40 people aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on the day of one of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil: September 11, 2001. Painstakingly researched with the full support and involvement of the families of the passengers and the crew members who lost their lives as well as the flight controllers and other military and civilian personnel who experienced the events of the day, United 93 is not only a riveting and inspiring portrait of courage and determination but also the first major motion picture to address the events of September 11.

Suggested donations are $1. The movie will be held in The Student Union Gardner Theatre, Monday, Sept 11 at 9 p.m.

Kyle Cease made a huge name for himself as Bogey Lowenstein in the hit film 10 Things I Hate About You. He was also featured as the “slow clapper” in Not Another Teen Movie. Kyle is known for his quick wit and funny facial expressions. His comic career started at age seven when he negotiated a deal with his second grade teacher. If he would stop goofing off during class, she would give him five minutes at the end of class to entertain the students. This proposal launched a career that features many achievements. At 18 he became the youngest headlining comedian in the Pacific Northwest. At 20, after winning the Giggles Comedy Competition, he moved to LA and became a regular at numerous top comedy clubs and was a guest on The Martin Short Show. He has also released a comedy CD, Wait Your Turn. Don’t miss this rising star!
