U.S. Army Herald Trumpets - FREE concert in Guzzetta Recital Hall! Sept. 25
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The United States Army Herald Trumpets will be performing a free concert on Monday, Sept. 25 at noon in Guzzetta Recital Hall at The University of Akron School of Music.

Whether arrayed on the balcony of the White House hailing the arrival of visiting dignitaries from around the world, performing the National Anthem on the 50-yard line of the Superbowl, or hailing the inauguration of a President, The United States Army Herald Trumpets is one of the most spectacular performing groups in America.

Since its establishment in 1959, The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets has performed at numerous historical occasions. Its first official performance welcomed Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II to America for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. In the ensuing years the group has performed for an illustrious array of presidents, prime ministers, and royalty. The Army Herald Trumpets has performed fanfares during opening ceremonies for the 1980 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California, and the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The ensemble's appearances at several World’s Fairs, the opening of Walt Disney World, the “G8” Economic Summits in 1984, 1990, and 2004, and the pre-game of Superbowl XXXIX were critically acclaimed.

The Army Herald Trumpets is frequently seen by millions worldwide while performing on televised events such as the relighting of the Statue of Liberty, the annual national holiday celebrations “A Capitol Fourth,” “Christmas in Washington,” and numerous Memorial and Veteran’s Day events which celebrate America’s proud military tradition.

The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets gave memorable performances at the dedication of the National WWII Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC, in 2004, and added fanfare to the arrival of foreign leaders for the ceremonies commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations in San Francisco, New York City, and Washington, DC, that same year.

Concert is at noon on Monday, Sept. 25 in Guzzetta Recital Hall and is Free and open to the public.

Newman Catholic Campus Ministry will begin a 4-part video series with speaker Christopher West on Theology of the Body on Wednesday, September 27. Theology of the Body is the working title Pope John Paul II gave to the first major teaching project of his pontificate. This life-changing message, which has been called the new sexual revolution, deals with the meaning of life, why we were created male and female, and how we are made to image God with our bodies. The Pope’s biographer called Theology of the Body a “theological time-bomb, set to go off with dramatic consequences…perhaps in the 21st century.” Join us as this time bomb begins to explode! Dinner compliments of the Newman Center begin at 6:30. Please RSVP to ua_newman@yahoo.com so we know how much food to prepare. Students of all faiths welcome.

Distinguished curator James Robinson of the British Museum, specialist in medieval jewelry, pilgrim badges and seals, and a renowned expert on art and archaeology from the late eleventh to the early sixteenth century, visits the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art on Friday, Sept. 29, to deliver the Catherine H. Campbell Art History Lecture at 6 p.m. in Folk Hall auditorium (150 E. Exchange St.).

In this fascinating look at life during the reigns of Edward II and Edward III, fourteenth-century England becomes better understood through an examination of its material culture. Since 1992, Robinson has worked for the British Museum in London in the Department of Prehistory and Europe. His current projects include a new permanent gallery for the medieval collections (opening 2008), and an accompanying illustrated book. Light refreshments will follow this free public lecture.
