Students invited to celebrate opening of new performing arts facilities at Guzzetta Sept. 29
11:30 am - 10:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
On Friday, Sept. 29, the campus and community is invited to celebrate the opening of a major addition to Guzzetta Hall that is bringing all of UA’s educational programs in the performing arts — dance, theatre, music, and arts administration — under one big roof.

The addition is a world-class center for dance and theatre. It is the new home of UA’s Dance Program — named one of the most sought-after dance programs in the country by Dance Spirit magazine — as well as UA’s Dance Institute, Theatre Program, and Arts Administration Program. The original portion of Guzzetta Hall, built in 1976, remains the home of UA’s School of Music, Guzzetta Recital Hall, and Sandefur Theatre.

The opening events on Sept. 29 include:

11:30 a.m. at Guzzetta Hall
Dedication ceremony and performance.

12:30 to 2 p.m. at Guzzetta Hall
Campus picnic, tours of the new facilities, theatre performances, Pilates and yoga demonstrations, nutrition information, dance master classes, music by the UA Steel Drum Band.

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Guzzetta Hall
Performances by dancers, actors and musicians from the campus and throughout Northeast Ohio, including University Theatre, Theatre Guild (5:30 p.m. in Sandefur Theatre), The University of Akron Dance Company, Dance Institute, Dancing Wheels, Groundworks Dancetheater, UA’s African Drumming Ensemble and guest drummer Bernard Woma from Ghana (6:30 p.m. in Guzzetta Recital Hall), and New World Performance Laboratory (6:30 p.m. in Sandefur Theatre). Tours of the new facilities.

8 p.m. at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall
Performance at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall by the internationally acclaimed Parsons Dance Company, followed by a reception for the entire audience with founder David Parsons and the dancers. The Parsons performance is the finale of a campus residency by the contemporary dance company and founder David Parsons. The residency, sponsored by the UA College of Fine and Applied Arts’ Mary Schiller Myers Lecture Series, is enabling UA’s dance students to work closely with and learn from the talented professionals.

All of the events on Sept. 29 are free except for the performance by the Parsons Dance Company. Tickets for the Parsons performance are available through the Thomas Hall Ticket Office at 330-972-7570 or here. Prices are $20 for reserved seats; $12 for UA faculty and staff; and $10 for UA students. Tickets for UA faculty, staff and students are available only at the Thomas Hall Ticket Office.

To learn more about the events, contact Cyndee Ramsthaler at 330-972-5196 or cyndee@uakron.edu.

This month we will be acknowledging the harvest season. Small gourds and materials will be provided and each participant can decorate one as they wish—perhaps a caricature of a Spanish professor? If you are not “crafty”, you are welcome to come and admire or laugh at the results of the others!

We will start gathering and decorating at 6 pm and will continue until 8 pm. The gathering is open to everyone in the campus community, beginners to native speakers. Participants may come and go as they please.

The event is free, but each person is expected to spend a minimum of $2 on food or beverages. The food is good and the prices are moderate.

Come and have some hands-on fun!

ZPN is sponsoring Pirates of the Caribbean- Dead Man’s Chest for all UA students!

Captain Jack Sparrow is caught up in another tangled web of supernatural intrigue. Although the curse of the Black Pearl has been lifted, an even more terrifying threat looms over its captain and scurvy crew: it turns out that Jack owes a blood debt to the legendary Davy Jones, Ruler of the Ocean Depths, who captains the ghostly Flying Dutchman, which no other ship can match in speed and stealth. Unless the ever-crafty Jack figures a cunning way out of this Faustian pact, he will be cursed to an afterlife of eternal servitude and damnation in the service of Jones. This startling development interrupts the wedding plans of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who once again find themselves thrust into Jack's misadventures, leading to escalating confrontations with sea monsters, very unfriendly islanders, flamboyant soothsayer Tia Dalma and even the mysterious appearance of Will's long-lost father, Bootstrap Bill. Meanwhile, ruthless pirate hunter Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company sets his sights on retrieving the fabled "Dead Man's Chest." According to legend, whoever possesses the Dead Man's Chest gains control of Davy Jones, and Beckett intends to use this awesome power to destroy every last Pirate of the Caribbean once and for all. For times are changing on the high seas, with businessmen and bureaucrats becoming the true pirates--and freewheeling, fun-loving buccaneers like Jack and his crew threatened with extinction.

This is a free movie for all UA Students and Only $1 for non UA students! The movie will be held in The Student Union Gardner Theatre. The movie will be at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, Friday Oct. 13 and Saturday Oct. 14. Tickets are available in the Student Union Info Center today!
