The University of Akron Press has recently published "Akron’s 'Better Half': Women’s Clubs and the Humanization of the City, 1825-1925." This book is the next release in The University of Akron Press Series on Ohio History and Culture. It shows how that while the men of Akron busied themselves laying the economic, legal and industrial foundations, their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters were equally busy weaving the benevolent and cultural fabric of the growing city. It was a pattern replicated in scores of industrial centers across the nation. This is the story of how it happened in Akron, Ohio.

"Akron’s Better Half" is available in cloth at $54.95 and in paperback at $27.95. University of Akron students and faculty can purchase the book for get a 20% discount, or $44.00 in cloth and $22.35 in paperback. spacer image
The University of Akron Press will soon be releasing Behind the Veil: An American Women’s Memoir of the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis by Debra Johanyak, who draws on her own journal and family letters, as well as public news sources to provide a recount of the events in her life during that turbulent time. Against a background of increasing political and religious tensions, she gives the reader vivid pictures of the world she experienced there, in good times and bad—tribal customs in a village wedding, sandstorms, the warmth of the large Iranian family she married into, and the threatening pressure of Islamic fundamentalists. Coming face to face with dramatic changes in Iran’s government and society, Johanyak must also confront her own identity.

University of Akron students and faculty receive a 20% discount, making Behind the Veil available to them at $40.00 in cloth and $20.00 in paperback. Regular price is $49.95 in cloth and $24.95 in paperback. Orders can be placed by phone at (330) 972-6953 or by email at uapress@uakron.edu.

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
If you are a musician who must hear the music accurately, but you need to reduce the volume to save your hearing... or you are a music enthusiast who enjoys concerts and clubs where the music is too LOUD to be safe, but you still want to precisely hear the music you love... custom made musicians earplugs or Hi-Fidelity earplugs will save your hearing and still allow you to enjoy music to the fullest!

Ordinary earplugs reduce high frequency sounds too much, which means you hear mostly the mid and low frequencies. This often distorts speech and makes music sound terrible! Custom-made musicians earplugs and over the counter Hi-Fidelity earplugs provide the necessary reduction in sound to avoid damage while maintaining the quality you deserve!

Don’t wait another day to protect your hearing. The Audiology and Speech Center offers custom-made musicians earplugs and over the counter Hi-Fidelity earplugs at significantly reduced pricing for faculty, staff, and students. Call today to schedule an appointment for your custom made musician’s plugs!

The clinic is open weekdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Contact the Audiology and Speech Center, located in the Polsky Building, at 330-972-7883 to schedule your appointment to learn more about protecting your hearing from the music you love.
