Biology T-shirt Design Contest Sponsored by the Biology Club Oct. 25 - Nov. 20

The Biology Club will be hosting a Biology T-shirt contest for someone to design a new Biology Department T-shirt. The T-shirt should try to cover all of the disciplines of biology such as cellular biology, physiology, genetics, ecology, and evolution. The T-shirt must have The University of Akron somewhere on it. Colors are at the artist’s discretion. The deadline for design entries will be Monday, Nov. 20, in the Biology Department office in Auburn Science and Engineering Center or can be e-mailed (make sure the image is in high resolution) to ua.beta.bio.fphy@gmail.com. Design entries can be turned in any time until the deadline. The winning design will be determined by within a week of the deadline by a panel of Biology department professors. The Grand Prize for the winning design will be $50 and a hooded sweatshirt with your design on it. If you have any questions contact John J. Reho at jjr13@uakron.edu

The University of Akron's Theatre Guild is having a playwrighting contest to raise money and to support aspiring playwrights.Here are the rules:

--The contest is open to all playwrights writing in English.
--All submissions must be original, unpublished, and unproduced material.
--One-act and other short plays are eligible. Musicals are not eligible.
--A check or money order for $15, made payable to The University of Akron, must accompany each entry.
--Playwrights may submit more than one entry per contest.
--Please include:
1) A stamped, self-addressed postcard if you wish to be notified of receipt of material.
2) A manuscript-size, self addressed, stamped envelope if you wish to have your manuscript returned.
3) A letter-size, self addressed, stamped envelope for notification of the winning entry.
--All material not accompanied by self-addressed, stamped envelopes will be recycled.
--All manuscripts must be typed (clear copies are acceptable), one-sided only.
--All manuscript pages must be numbered.
--Each entry must contain two title pages with name, address, phone number, and e-mail of the author.
--The title should appear on each page of the manuscript (upper right-hand corner).
--The author’s name should not appear on the manuscript ecepton the title pages.
--The deadline for the 2007 award is (postmark) Dec. 6.

The manuscripts will be judged by Mike Geither, MFA, a three-time recipient of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship. The winning entry will be produced as one of the spring 2006 shows presented by the Theater Guild of The University of Akron (may be entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Playwriting Awards category). All proceeds from The University of Akron production of the winning play will be the property of The University of Akron Theater Guild. The Author of the winning play will retain copyright to the material (please acknowledge Theater Guild and The University of Akron in subsequent productions). Casting call for the film 'Throwing Stones' Oct. 30 - Oct. 31

The 2380 Project at the University of Akron is currently casting for its film "Throwing Stones," written and directed Nicholas Scott. The 2380 Project is a nonprofit student organization. The film is going to be shot on weekends throughout the next few months. These are unpaid parts, but it is an experience that can be put on a resume.

The casting call will be held Monday, Oct. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 9 p.m. These are open auditions, so there is no need to be on time or to be present the whole time. Just drop in and try out.

Casting will be held in Guzzetta Hall Room 247. Stop by and give it a shot. Anyone is welcome. For questions contact us at nss1@uakron.edu.

Pillowcase Project for Kids in Foster Care Nov. 1

This fall semester the UAEYC has created a fall project to help adolescents in foster care. We will be collecting items from Oct. 10 though Oct. 26 for adolescents who will be heading off to college. These items include pens, notebooks, folders, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, condition, fabric for the pillowcases, etc. There will be flyers posted around the Student Union, Zook, Polsky, and Shrank South for a complete list. We are also be accepting cash donations which can be given to our faculty advisor Susan Witt, whose office is in Shrank South 215E. Once we are finished collecting the needed items we will have a meeting in Shrank South 209 to put the pillowcase care packages together. The UAEYC hopes to get a big turn out to help sew pillowcases, decorate them and pack them full of goodies to help those young adults going off to college.

The University of Akron Dance Program presents Choreographers’ Workshop 2006, at 8 p.m., Nov. 2, 3, and 4, at Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall. All proceeds support scholarships for talented undergraduate dance students.

Each year, Choreographers’ Workshop introduces works choreographed by UA dance students. This year, 10 new works will be choreographed by 11 students. From ballet to modern, lyrical to hip-hop, this program presents original, creative pieces of every style, danced by the talented students of the UA Dance Program.

Attention all students: Are you an avid pool player, or a novice that would like to show your skill? The Student Union Game Room is going to be hosting the Barry Lefkowitz Scholarship Tournament on Nov. 4. This is an 8-ball billiards tournament and the cost is only $10. Doors open at 8 a.m., and both a light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The first place prize is a $1,000 scholarship, 2nd place prize is $500 and 3rd place is $250. Every participant will receive a tee shirt and trophy. It’s so easy to register, just pick up a form at one of the following locations: The SOuRCe, Game Room, Information Center and all Residence Halls! To complete the registration process, students must pay at the Information Center and submit their registration form. Participants will receive 2 free hours of practice time every week until the day of the tournament.

“Making the Web Work to Market Your Business” is the focus of this year’s CITe seminar at The University of Akron on November 17 for marketing & IT professionals, small business owners, and entrepreneurs engaged in or considering e-commerce.

The third annual seminar, hosted by University of Akron’s Center for IT & business (CITe), will be from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the University’s Student Union, 303 Carroll St. An optional hands-on workshop, “Are the right customers finding your site?” will be presented from 2:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. by The Karcher Group.

The seminar will show participants how to take their Internet marketing efforts to the next level via several case studies, tips for web makeovers from industry experts, an interactive panel discussion, and a keynote address by Eric Olsen, founder & publisher of Blogcritics.org.

During the workshop, experts from Karcher group will discuss makeover Web sites from the morning session, look at overall and on-page optimization, and show search engine optimization techniques using participant Web sites. Participants will be able to immediately apply these techniques to their Web sites during the workshop, practicing the exercises taught by workshop leaders. The registration fee for UA Faculty/staff/students is $50.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.
