N.Y. art historian to open of Emily Davis Gallery exhibition Oct. 30 - Dec. 1
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Bringing together a diversity of art objects collectively known as multiples, the Emily Davis Gallery at The Mary Schiller Myers School of Art examines the ideological tensions between artists and the art world in a groundbreaking exhibition: "Mass Production: Artists’ Multiples and the Marketplace". This uniquely focused exhibition, which runs through Dec. 1, surveys the genre of the artist’s multiple (defined as a three-dimensional artwork produced in quantity) – from 1935 to the present – and examines the ambiguous relationship between these objects and the world of commerce.

To celebrate the opening of this fascinating exhibition, Reiko Tomii - a New York based art historian and curator - will present a lecture "Eye Love Multiples: The Tradition of Superflat" on Wednesday, November 8, at 6 pm in the auditorium of Folk Hall (150 E. Exchange St., Akron). Tomii’s expertise as an investigator of post-1945 Japanese art in global and local contexts will provide depth and insight on the Multiples show. An opening reception for the exhibition follows the lecture, featuring jazz by UA musicians. All events are free and open to the public.

The Mass Production exhibition features over 140 works by artists such as Duchamp, Dali, Ono, Warhol, Oldenburg, Murakami, and many others. Displayed chronologically, the exhibition explores the various distribution channels through which multiples have been made available. The curator of Mass Production, Dr. Kevin Concannon, Assistant Professor of Art History at The University of Akron has actively engaged students in the Multiples project, as a special topics class at Myers researched and wrote catalogue entries, while a summer graphic design class with UA Professor Christopher Hoot worked to produce the exhibition’s stunning full-color catalogue. In addition, graduate gallery assistant students in UA’s Master of Fine Arts Administration program have had a key role in preparing and organizing this extensive exhibition. Copies of the limited edition catalogue for Mass Production are available for purchase through the University Galleries in Folk hall.

Specific works highlighted in the show include Duchamp’s Rotoreliefs (1935); a perfume bottle designed by Dali for fashion diva Elsa Shiaparelli; Warhol’s famous Brillo Boxes (1964); and an assortment of works by Japanese contemporary artists Yoshimoto Nara and Takashi Murakami—ranging from inexpensive toys to Murakami’s Louis Vuitton handbag. The Emily Davis Gallery is open Mon-Tues-Fri-Sat from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Wed. & Thurs. from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., closed Sunday. For more information, call 330-972-5951, email dwatt@uakron.edu or visit http://www.uakron.edu/art/.

Originally from Rochester, NY, Jennifer Heieck has the poise and grace of a seasoned professional, while having the spunk and charisma of a fresh new sound. Jenn has made a name for herself by playing a unique style of piano-based pop, rock, and jazz. Her love of music has been inspired by such artists as Janis Joplin, Alanis Morissette, U2, Tori Amos, and Dave Matthews. Her unique style has been referred to as a mix of Sarah McLaughlin’s softness, Alanis Morissette’s edge, and Janis Joplin’s soul. Jenn’s songwriting styles include spunky jazz jams, bluesy pop songs, and dulcet ballads. See why one music critic has said that “…hearing her sing you realize she is one of those rare artists that could achieve both mainstream success and musical credibility at the same time.”

Sociology Club to host the free play 'Making it Right' Nov. 8

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Cleveland Public Theatre's Education Department and the Cleveland YMCA’s Y-Haven Program present "Making it Right," the 2006 CPT/Y-Haven performance project. For the seventh year in a row, CPT, Cleveland’s leading alternative theatre and Y-Haven, YMCA’s transitional home and treatment center for homeless men in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, have collaborated to create an original performance. CPT Artists work with residents of Y-Haven to create an original play performed by the residents and based on their personal experiences. This year’s production is guided by Director Denis Griesmer and Dramaturge Deborah Burke.

"Making It Right" is the story of Al Anderson, a man who has successfully turned his life around yet struggles to reconcile his feelings around the stranger that he harmed in the past. It explores universal themes of regret, forgiveness and responsibility. Despite his successes and material comforts, Anderson feels obligated to take responsibility for his past by tracking down the stranger he once harmed. "Making It Right" follows Anderson’s attempts to reconcile himself with the nightmares of his past in order to move forward with his future.

The CPT/Y-Haven Project offers candid insight into important issues of our society and gives real hope for growth and change. Audiences are continually blown-away by the poignant and moving stories presented by this powerful collaboration.

This play is free and open to the public.

ZPN is sponsoring Beerfest for all UA students.

"When American brothers Todd and Jan Wolfhouse travel to Germany to spread their grandfather's ashes at Oktoberfest, they stumble upon a super-secret, centuries old, underground beer games competition--"Beerfest," the secret Olympics of beer drinking. The brothers receive a less than warm welcome from their German cousins, the Von Wolfhausens, who humiliate Todd and Jan, slander their relatives, and finally cast them out of the event. Vowing to return in a year to defend their country and their family's honor, the Wolfhouse boys assemble a ragtag dream team of beer drinkers and gamers: Barry Badrinath, the consummate skills player with a dark past; Phil Krundle (aka Landfill), a one-man chugging machine; and Charlie "Fink" Finklestein, the lab tech with a PhD in 'All Things Beer'. This Magnificent Five train relentlessly, using their hearts, minds and livers to drink faster, smarter and harder than they ever have before. But first they must battle their own demons--as well as a bunch of big, blond, German jerks who want to destroy the team before they can even make it back to Munich."

This is a free movie for all UA Students and only $1 for non-UA students. The movie will be held in the Student Union Theatre at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11.
