In the ancient period Plato was influenced by Socrates and Aristotle was influenced by Plato. In the Modern period each philosophy show's influence by the preceding philosophers. In this meeting we will be looking at an often overlooked influence on philosophical thought, Avicenna's influence on Thomas Aquinas. Our own, Dr. Livecchi will compare and contrast both philosophers and then we will discuss the views of each, in an interesting exposition of how one philosopher came to his own beliefs.

"Evidence of Democracy": Photographer Paul Shambroom to lecture Nov. 14th Nov. 14

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Paul Shambroom, contemporary artist and photographer, has always been interested in American politics, culture, and power. On Tuesday, Nov. 14, Shambroom will visit the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art to deliver the Bidwell Visiting Artists lecture: "Evidence of Democracy – The Photographs of Paul Shambroom", at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Folk Hall (150 E. Exchange St., Akron, OH). The lecture is free and open to the pubic – light refreshments will follow.

Since the 1980’s, Paul Shambroom has developed two extended series of photographs. Both projects explore American political identity. The first examines the U.S. and nuclear weapons, and the second concerns community and municipal meetings in cities and towns across the country. Shambrooms' current photographic projects take a look at issues of fear, safety and liberty in post-9/11 America.

Shambroom’s photographs have been extensively exhibited nationally and internationally, and are found in many permanent collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago. UADC presents 2006 Fall Dance Concert known for
energetic creativity and remarkable dancing

The University of Akron Dance Company presents its 2006 Fall Dance Concert. UA faculty members have created dances that range from classical ballet to modern dramatic dancing. The program will also include one student work selected from Choreographers’ Workshop.

Fiddle Celebration, choreographed by Andrew Carroll, is inspired by the music of violinist Mark O’Connor. It has the flavor of an Appalachian celebration and has been created for five dancers: two men and three women en point. Lucinda, created by Marc Ozanich, is dedicated to all the past and present heads of dance. This modern dance includes five short pieces performed by 15 dancers. The work of Cydney Spohn, Peter’s Park, is inspired by the atmosphere of a playground. Five dancers move to asymmetrical and playful music by contemporary composer Peter Schickele. Jass, choreographed by Tom Smith and performed by 16 dancers, is a tour de force history of jazz in 10 minutes.

Performances are Nov. 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at Paul A. Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $6 for seniors, students, UA faculty and staff. The ticket office opens one hour before each performance. For reservations call 330-972-7895. A group discount is available in advance for 10 or more patrons.
