The University: The University of Akron is a major, metropolitan, state assisted university. The University has a long tradition of serving the needs of part-time and full-time students through day and evening classes, and it attracts traditional-age students and adult students from all economic, social and ethnic backgrounds. The 218-acre campus, with 81 buildings, is within walking distance of downtown Akron and is located in a metropolitan area of 2.8 million people.

The Department of Student Life & the Student Union: The Department of Student Life is housed in the Student Union. The Student Union is a 198,000 square foot facility that houses food shops, Union Market, bank, bookstore, convenience store, Starbucks, student organization offices, game room, theatre, information center, computer lab and store, copy center, meeting rooms, programming spaces, and administrative offices. The new $41.1 million facility opened in August 2004. In addition to Conferencing & Events, the Department of Student Life includes Greek Life Programs, Commuter Central, All-Campus Programming, the Zips Programming Network, the Student Organization Resource Center, Leadership and Development, Student Judicial Affairs, and the management of the Student Union Facility. The department includes 15 professional staff, 3 full-time support staff, 10 custodial staff, 7 graduate assistants and over 80 student employees.

The Position: The Conferencing Center Student Assistant reports to the LEGO manager for the Conferencing Center. The Conferencing Center student assistant will be responsible for assisting the LEGO manager and assistant manager with various projects for upcoming Student Union events.

Responsibilities: Characteristics, duties and responsibilities of the Conferencing Center LEGO Student Assistant include:
-Assist with various projects assigned by Supervisor and LEGO manager of the Conferencing Center.
-Assist in decorating for weddings and other conferences or events.
-Working scheduled shifts as well as possible weekend shifts.
-Interact with internal and external customers, co-workers, and numerous professionals from DJs to Florists, Managers, Supervisors and other full-time staff and student employees.
-Identify creative ways or new ideas to complete area tasks.
-Demonstrate confidence in ability to help customers and complete tasks.
-Willingness to cover shifts for other student employees within the Conferencing Center.
-Attend Conferencing Area meeting.
-Identify what tasks need to be completed without guidance from managers/supervisor.
-Assist with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
-Good standing at The University of Akron
-Must be enrolled in 12 credit hours.
-Minimum 2.0 GPA.
-Able and willing to work at least 15-20 hours/week.
-Friendly, enthusiastic and a self-motivator who is customer service oriented.
-Computer Literacy
-Polite, friendly, willing to work with others and display a positive attitude toward the student union, its mission statement and the University of Akron.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills

Each participating student will have the opportunity to work in the Department of Athletics and assist with promoting the Zips. College 360 Night at the Improv Comedy Club Nov. 18

College 360 is hosting an 18-and-over night at 10:15 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Improv Comedy Club. The event will feature Alex Ortiz, a nationally known Hispanic comedian. Tickets are 2-for-1 ($8 each), and the night is open to those 18 and over (the Improv is normally 21 and over).

Alex Ortiz is a fireman-turned-comic specializing in impressions, dialects, cartoon voices and song parodies. Alex won the prestigious Showtime at the Apollo “TKO Comedy Champion” award in 2002. He has opened for such well-known acts as Bernie Mac, D.L. Hughley, and Bobcat Goldthwaite, and his comedy has been compared to Carlos Mencia of Comedy Central’s “Mind of Mencia.”

On Wednesday, Nov. 22 the Student Recreation and Wellness Center will close at 5 p.m. and the ONAT will close at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24 both buildings will be closed. They will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 8 a.m.

In an effort to raise funds for the Akron Children's Hospital as well as increase holiday spirit on and around campus, Phi Gamma Delta will be hosting a house holiday decorating contest.

The registration fee is $30, which will be due on Wednesday, Nov. 29 by 5 p.m. to the FIJI mailbox in the Source or to the FIJI house located at 261 Spicer St.

The contest will be open to any University student or student organization with a house. Students and/or student organizations are permitted to sponsor houses other than their own.

The winner will receive 50 percent of proceeds raised during the contest. The awards ceremony will be held at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, at the FIJI house.

Sister Mary Sujita, Superior General, Sisters of Notre Dame, will be speaking about signs of hope in working with the poor. For more than ten years she has worked among the poor in India. Her work has been especially focused on the cause of poor women and the success of a micro loan program. She is now serving her second term as superior general of the Sisters of Notre Dame, an international organization. She especially wants to address her remarks to, and answer questions from, students interested in working to solve problems of poverty and enhancing the empowerment of women.

The event is sponsored by the College of Business Administration and is free and open to the public.
