Safety alert: Two students held up on south side of campus

University of Akron police will be stepping up their presence on the south side of campus after two students were robbed near Grant Residence Hall yesterday about 10 p.m. The students were unharmed, but various personal items were taken.

Each of the robbers — two men and a woman — were described as black. They were dressed in black clothing, wearing black hoodies. They remain at large.

This is the third such incident in this area. On Friday night, a 43-year-old woman on Exchange Street was robbed, and then about an hour later, two UA students walking on Sumner Street were robbed. In each case, the two suspects were black males wearing dark hoodies.

UA police and the Akron Police Department are working together on the case. "We are putting a lot of resources into solving these crimes, and that includes a higher police presence in that neighborhood at all hours," said Paul Callahan, chief of the University Police Department.

If you have any information about these crimes, call the University Police Department at 330-972-7123. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Callahan offers these safety tips to students:
  • Use the campus escort service. Patrol members will escort you between campus locations from 5 p.m. to midnight when school is in session. Call 330-972-7263 to request the service.
  • Walk in a group, if possible.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • If you feel threatened, cross the street, locate an emergency phone, or enter a store or place of business even if you have just left it. There are about 50 emergency phones located across campus, distinguished by their blue lights. Operational around the clock, the phones connect directly to our police dispatcher.
  • Have your keys in hand as you approach your car. Check the back seat before you enter.
  • Program the University’s emergency line into your cell phone: 330-972-7123. Of course, 9-1-1 works anywhere.
The University Police Department, with 35 officers, operates around the clock to help assure student safety on campus and in surrounding neighborhoods.
