Police: Call us if you notice anything unusual

Students who live in the neighborhood just south of campus were encouraged to call University police if they notice anything unusual as they come and go. That advice was offered during a safety session Wednesday evening in the Student Union. Officers from the University and city of Akron police departments spoke.

“It’s amazing how often small tips from everyday people add up to something we can use,” said University police chief Paul Callahan. “Students should not be shy about calling. We value every call.”

Students should call the department at 330-972-7123 or 9-1-1 in an emergency. He suggested that students program those numbers into their cell phones.

Here are some other tips for residents in the neighborhood to help deter thefts and other incidents:
  • If you are leaving home, leave on a light or a radio or a TV — anything to make it appear as if someone is home.
  • Lock doors and windows. Callahan said many times thieves enter through unlocked doors and windows. Ask your landlord to install a deadbolt, if one is not present.
  • Let the department know if a street light is out on the street.
  • Walk in groups if possible.
  • If you feel threatened, cross the street, find an emergency phone, or enter a store or business. There are about 50 emergency phones on campus, distinguished by their blue lights. Operational around the clock, the phones connect directly to the UA police dispatcher.
  • Have your keys in hand as you approach your car or house.
  • Alcohol and other drugs can impair your perceptions and decision-making. Do not place yourself in a vulnerable position by being intoxicated or under the influence of other drugs.
Callahan said his officers are continuing to concentrate their attention on the neighborhood. The department operates around the clock and works closely with city and county enforcement agencies.

ZPN is sponsoring Gridiron Gang for all UA students.

The uplifting story of detention camp probation officer Sean Porter, who creates a high-school-level football team from a ragtag group of dangerous teenage inmates as a means to teach them self-respect and social responsibility. He is joined in this experiment by co-worker, Malcolm Moore. But Porter must first overcome almost universal resistance from the powers that be -- his skeptical bosses and coaches at rival high schools who don't want their players mixing it up with convicted criminals on the football field.

This is a free movie for all UA Students and only $1 for non UA students. The movie will be at 10 p.m., Monday, Dec. 11 and at 9 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 13 in the Student Union Gardner Theatre. Tickets are available in the Student Union Info Center starting Dec. 5.
