The University of Akron Police Department encourages students, faculty and staff to be cautious when in the area south of campus, especially after dark. Two additional reports of armed assaults in that area were reported - one on Thursday evening and one early this morning. The latest victim was assaulted and shot. He is hospitalized and in stable condition.

On Thursday night, the Akron Police Department responded to a call reporting an armed robbery near Brown and Powers streets. A person reported being robbed at gunpoint by two black males wearing dark hoodies, a description similar to that reported in several earlier nighttime attacks in the area.

At 4:42 a.m., both Akron City and University police responded to a call from a 23-year-old man who said he was assaulted near Kathryn Place by a black male, 5'11", wearing a dark hoodie and baggy pants.

Police patrols in the area are being increased even further. Students and others are encouraged to:
  • Use the campus escort service. Patrol members will escort you between campus locations from 5 p.m. to midnight when school is in session. Call 330-972-7263 to request the service.
  • Walk in a group, if possible.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • If you feel threatened, cross the street, locate an emergency phone, or enter a store or place of business even if you have just left it. There are about 50 emergency phones located across campus, distinguished by their blue lights. Operational around the clock, the phones connect directly to the UA police dispatcher.
  • Have your keys in hand as you approach your car. Check the back seat before you enter.

Please report any suspicious activity immediately by calling University dispatch at 330-972-7123, or 9-1-1.
