Graduation application deadline

Thursday, Feb. 15 is the graduation application deadline for students planning to graduate at the end of the summer 2007 term with an associate or baccalaureate degree.

Graduation application forms may be obtained from:
• the University Registrar’s Web site;
• in the lobby of Simmons Hall.

Submit your graduation application to the Office of the University Registrar:
• by fax to 330-972-8632;
• in person to the Office of the University Registrar, Simmons Hall 120;
• by mail to the Office of the University Registrar, Attn: Graduation Services, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-6208.

To avoid the $100 late graduation application fee, don’t miss the deadline. Late applicants will also need to obtain a memo of late permission from their dean.

Valentine dinner-dance will raise funds for student relief work

All are invited to the second-annual Hearts for Humanity dinner-dance to be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in the Student Union Ballroom. The evening will include a fabulous dinner, a silent auction and jazz by visiting artist and renowned pianist Joe Augustine, with faculty members Tim Powell on bass and Mark Gonder on drums. Later in the evening, deejay Nick Nicholson will play a wide variety of music for dancing.

Proceeds from the event will be help defray travel expenses for a group of 60 UA students who will travel to Pass Christian, Miss., over spring break to assist with relief efforts.

Cost is $25 per person for the UA family and friends, and $20 for students. Reserve your seats by Feb. 6 on this Web page. No tickets will be sold at the door. The menu and other details about the event are here. Sponsors are the University administration, Akron-AAUP and Faculty Senate.

University of Akron students can purchase tickets at a reduced rate of $15 for the national tour of the Broadway hit, "The Producers – the new Mel Brooks musical," at E.J. Thomas Hall. (Regular ticket prices range from $57.50 to $27.50.) This offer is good for the following performances:

Last Spring Break Akron students, staff, and faculty joined others in Pass Christian, MS for hurricane relief efforts. This year the University is coordinating another trip back to Pass Christian, MS.

There will be an Information Session at 6 p.m., Jan. 30, in Student Union 316. At this meeting we will discuss the location, price range, share personal stories and talk about the benefits of participating.

Water polo is a game of skill and endurance which combines the best aspects of basketball and soccer and puts them in the water. Come get in shape while playing alongside coed classmates and community members. No experience is necessary but a competent swimming ability is required.

Participants will be instrumented with motion capture and surface electromyography equipment and asked to perform predetermined postures selected from the Yang style. Data collection will tentatively begin in early to mid February with flexible times to accommodate evening and weekend appointments. In 2001 Dan finished as runner-up in the Seattle International Comedy Competition. In 2002 he made his first of many appearances on the widely popular Bob and Tom Show. Two years ago, Dan began opening up for Larry the Cable Guy and performing in front of crowds of up to 9,000 people. Last year he opened for Ron White in front of sell-out crowds and was a featured performer at the prestigious Just for Laughs International Comedy Festival in Montreal. This year Dan made his national network debut on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and his Comedy Central debut on the new hit stand-up show, Live at Gotham

The University of Akron Ballroom Dance Club is welcoming new members! The club is open to all students, faculty, and staff of the University.

An informational meeting and free introductory lesson will be held on Wednesday, January 31st at 8 p.m. in the new wing of Guzzetta Hall, 3rd floor.

Everyone is welcome - no partner or experience is needed. Some of the dances we will be teaching this semester include tango, foxtrot, swing, rumba, and cha cha.

We also specialize in salsa dancing, and take frequent trips to salsa clubs and socials.

Ballroom dancing is a fun way to keep in shape and meet new people. You can learn some of the same steps you've seen on Dancing with the Stars or in movies like Take the Lead and Mad Hot Ballroom. Come to the meeting and first lesson to find out more. We hope to see you there!

Students come out and support your Zips Women's Basketball team Saturday, February 3 as they take on Eastern Michigan in a MAC Conference showdown. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the James A. Rhodes Arena. This game will serve as our annual youth basketball night. All kids in the 8th grade or lower will receive free admittance to the game by wearing their basketball jersey. So come out and show your blue and gold spirit Saturday night and cheer on the Zips to victory.

The Student Recreation & Wellness Center is offering a Collegiate Bouldering Competition on Saturday, February 3rd from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be bouldering problems set for people of all skill levels and prizes will be awarded in many different categories. No experience is necessary. You must be over 18 and a college student to participate. Competition fee is $15.00.
