Valentine dinner-dance will raise funds for student relief work

All are invited to the second-annual Hearts for Humanity dinner-dance to be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in the Student Union Ballroom. The evening will include a fabulous dinner, a silent auction and jazz by visiting artist and renowned pianist Joe Augustine, with faculty members Tim Powell on bass and Mark Gonder on drums. Later in the evening, deejay Nick Nicholson will play a wide variety of music for dancing.

Proceeds from the event will be help defray travel expenses for a group of 60 UA students who will travel to Pass Christian, Miss., over spring break to assist with relief efforts.

Cost is $25 per person for the UA family and friends, and $20 for students. Reserve your seats by Feb. 6 on this Web page. No tickets will be sold at the door. The menu and other details about the event are here. Sponsors are the University administration, Akron-AAUP and Faculty Senate.

The Office of Admissions is looking for a few good hosts. The Overnight Visit program allows admitted high school seniors the chance to take UA for a test drive - staying in a residence hall and shadowing a host student to class.

Hosting prospective students is a great way to show your Zips pride. To participate in the program, you should

* live on campus,
* be in good academic standing, and
* be willing to be a mentor and resource to prospective students.

Additionally, hosts receive $25 for each overnight visit.

The University Of Akron Board Of Trustees is accepting applications for nominations to the position of Student Trustee. The Term for the position is July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2009.

This is an opportunity to work closely with the Board of Trustees and the University administration on many policies that affect fellow students and the entire University. The Student Trustee is at least required to attend one Board of Trustee meeting per month and any committee meetings the Student Trustee sits on.

Applicant Requirements:

Applicant must be officially enrolled as a student in a minimum of six (6) credit hours, at the time of application. The student must be able to fulfill a two-year term as a Student Trustee before undergraduate graduation or must intend to continue on as a graduate student of the University, throughout the term of office. Graduate students must be able to serve the full two-year term before leaving the University.

Applicant must make satisfactory progress toward an academic degree by completing a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per academic year. Note: This clause does not apply to graduate students.

Applicant must maintain a satisfactory academic cumulative grade point of 2.0 or better if an undergraduate or law student, or 3.0 or better if a graduate student.

Applicant must be solvent with the University of Akron Accounts Receivable Department.

Application Process:

Applications will be accepted until the deadline of Friday, March 9, 2007 by 7:59 p.m. Applications should be submitted to the SOuRCe, Student Union 130, 303 Carroll Street, Akron, OH 44325. Interviews will follow the application deadline.

Five names will be selected by Associated Student Government, Graduate Student Government, the Student Bar Associate, and Adult Focus. Those names will be submitted to the President of the University, who will forward them to the Governor of the State of Ohio for final appointment decisions.

Student - Assistant Manager
Position Description

The Position: Information Center/Ticketmaster student manager reports to the Coordinator for Information and Event Services. The Information Center Assistant Manager will work up to 30 hours a week and will be paid $7.75.

Responsibilities: Characteristics duties and responsibilities of the Student employees include but are not limited to:
- Expectations of the student employees
- Expectations outlined in the LEGO manual
- Manage: Manage daily operations of the Information Center
- Collaborate with the Manager to maintain budget projections, conduct semester evaluations and develop procedures.
- Info Gather: Gather information about campus departments and events as well as off-campus information.
- Training: Participate in planning, facilitating of any area training sessions and all area meetings. Knowledgeable of area responsibilities: Scheduler Plus, Footprints, Public Address System, Outlook, Customer Service in order to provide Operation Excellence to our customers.
- Financial Management: Assist with daily purchases and deposits from the Information Center/TicketMaster with assistance from the other assistant manager.
- Maintenance: Oversee the day-to-day cleaning and on-going maintenance of: phones, cash register, paper cutter, laminator, Zipcard machine, TicketMaster Equipment, Scheduler plus system and Public Address System.
- Schedules: Assist in the scheduling of weekday and weekend shifts for fall, spring, and summer semesters as well as break schedules. Each employee will work weekends.
- Meetings: Attend all supervisory meetings, area meetings, and mentor meetings.
- University Calendar: Input calendar submissions to the UA Calendar Weekly
- TicketMaster: Train staff on TicketMaster Equipment and transactions. Check ticket stock weekly.
- Assist: Manager and Coordinator for Information and Event Services.


Qualifications:
- Enrolled in 12 credits per Fall and Spring semesters. For Summer Sessions, must be enrolled in 3 credits Summer II (to be eligible to work all summer) or be enrolled in 3 credits Summer I & III to be eligible to work all Summer Sessions.
- 2.0 minimum GPA
- Familiarity with various functional areas encompassed by this position
- Knowledge of TicketMaster, Scheduler Plus, Footprints, PA system, Outlook
- Demonstrate Leadership skills
- Polite friendly, willing to work with others and display a positive attitude toward the Student Union, its mission statement and the University of Akron.

Students come out and cheer on your Men's and Women's Basketball teams this Saturday February 3 in doubleheader action. Get yourself on TV as BOTH games will be aired LIVE on Fox Sports Net Ohio. The Men's team will tip off the events with the first game of the day as they host Ball State at 4:00 PM. Our Women's team will take on Eastern Michigan in a MAC Conference showdown immediately following the completion of the Men's game. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 PM.

This event serves as our annual youth night with all youth basketball players wearing their jersey and in the 8th grade or younger will receive complimentary admission to the games.

Mark Soppeland, distinguished professor in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, and his wife, Dr. Barbara Tannenbaum, chief curator and head of public programs at the Akron Art Museum, will be presenting a free public lecture with their own photos on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at 6 pm in Folk Hall. "Seen in China" will present the extraordinary experiences of Soppeland and Tannenbaum when they recently served as reviewers for the Hewlett Packard sponsored "FotoFest Beijing Meeting Place", October 23 through Oct. 27, 2006 in Beijing, China. They joined 36 international curators, publishers and artists to meet with 268 Chinese photographers selected from over one thousand applicants. The first Tertulia of this semester will take place on Wednesday, February 7 between 6 and 8 pm. If you would like to make something for a loved one for Valentine’s Day, we will have materials available. If you only want to come and chat, please feel welcome to attend.
