Thursday’s classes in Arts and Sciences building will be relocated

Because the College of Arts and Sciences Building continues to be without heat, classes scheduled for that building on Thursday will be moved to other buildings. The schedule of relocated classes for Thursday may be viewed at http://www.uakron.edu/info/docs/CAS_schedule_for_01-25-07.pdf. If Friday’s classes must be moved as well, updated information will be posted on this page and will be sent by e-mail to faculty, staff and students.

Many of the rescheduled classes will be held on the second floor of Central-Hower High School, which is on Buchtel Avenue opposite the Arts and Sciences Building. A map is here. In addition, signs will be posted to help guide pedestrians.

Repair update

The underground steam line that provides heat to the building developed a pinhole leak Monday afternoon and was shut down. Crews have been working around the clock to locate the site of the leak. Finding the leak is challenging because the pipe is insulated and because the leak is evident only when high-temperature hot water is sent through it. Once site of the leak is found, the repair is expected to be completed within hours.

Because we are trying to keep as much heat in the Arts and Sciences Building as possible, access continues to be restricted. Staff members are available by phone or e-mail. Phone numbers for each of the building’s departments are below.

For students who want to add a class

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences may add a class with only the instructor’s signature while the building is closed. Once the instructor has signed the add slip, the student should take it to the Office of the Registrar in Simmons Hall for processing.

When the building reopens, adding a class from that point forward will require the approval of the instructor, an adviser and the dean’s office.
