Friday and Saturday classes
in Arts and Sciences building will be relocated

Because the College of Arts and Sciences Building continues to be without heat, classes scheduled for that building on Friday will be moved to Central-Hower, and Saturday classes will be relocated elsewhere on campus. The schedule of relocated classes for Friday may be viewed at http://www.uakron.edu/info/docs/CAS_schedule_for_01-26-07.pdf. The information also will be posted at Central-Hower, the Student Union and the Arts and Sciences Building.

Saturday’s class relocations will be posted on this page and will be sent by e-mail to faculty, staff and students.

Central-Hower is on Buchtel Avenue opposite the Arts and Sciences Building. A map is here. In addition, signs are posted to help guide pedestrians.

Repair update
The underground steam line that provides heat to the building was shut down Monday after the line developed what is believed to be a pinhole leak. Crews have been working around the clock near Kolbe and Memorial halls to locate the site of the leak. Finding the leak is challenging because the pipe is insulated and because the leak is evident only when high-temperature hot water is sent through it. Once the site of the leak is found, the repair is expected to be completed within hours.

Contacting departments in the Arts and Sciences Building
Because we are trying to keep as much heat in the Arts and Sciences Building as possible, access continues to be restricted. However, staff members are available to assist you by phone at the numbers below or by e-mail. Students who need to meet with faculty members outside of class may contact the faculty member directly or through their department to make arrangements.

  • Dean’s Office, 330-972-7880
  • Department of Computer Science, 330-972-8805
  • Department of Economics, 330-972-7546
  • Department of Geography and Planning, 330-972-7620
  • Department of History, 330-972-7006
  • Department of Psychology, 330-972-7280
  • Department of Statistics, 330-972-6886
  • Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics, 330-972-7400
  • Pan-African Studies Program, 330-972-5379

For students who want to add a class
Students in the College of Arts and Sciences may add a class with only the instructor’s signature while the building is closed. Once the instructor has signed the add slip, the student should take it to the Office of the Registrar in Simmons Hall for processing.

When the building reopens, adding a class from that point forward will require the approval of the instructor, an adviser and the dean’s office.

Thank you
Your continued patience and cooperation are appreciated greatly.
