If you have a friend or family member who has expressed an interest in seeking counseling services, The University’s Clinic for Individual and Family Counseling (Carroll Hall 128) can help.

The clinic has been offering low-cost counseling services to the public for 20 years. It offers counseling to individuals, couples and families for a wide range of concerns. The clinic can help those struggling with career-related concerns, depression, anxiety, anger, relationship concerns, divorce and blended family issues.

The clinic, part of the College of Education, is a nonprofit counseling center staffed by master’s and doctoral-level trainees who are supervised by licensed faculty members.
A sliding fee system is used, but no one will be denied services because of an inability to pay.

All College of Education students, who are seeking licensure, take advantage of an opportunity to teach in France through the Franco-American Teachers-in-Training Institute (FATITI). Selected as the only U.S. site, FATITI is funded by the United States Department of State.

The University of Akron is currently recruiting pre-service teachers seeking licensure in Early Childhood, Middle Level, and Adolescent-Young-Adult education to take part in this unique experience during the upcoming fall semester.

Air travel, housing and a stipend for additional living expenses will be provided to all participants. The ability to speak French is not required but an opportunity to learn is guaranteed.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni of The University of Akron, as well as community members, who have engaged in service-learning or volunteer projects in the University Park neighborhoods are encouraged to apply for a 2007 University Park Alliance Award, sponsored by Dominion.

The awards recognize outstanding community outreach and revitalization efforts by members of the University community and neighborhood organizations.


Up to ten $1,000 awards (and trophies) will be presented at an awards luncheon on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 to awardees in the following categories:

Students, your Women's Basketball team will play its final regular season home-game at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, against the University of Buffalo. This game will play as our annual Senior Day, where Jessie Crooks and Mandy Holzer will be recognized before the game.

Following the women’s game, the men will compete at 7 p.m. against Bowling Green State University. Immediately following the game, the movie "Glory Road” will be played in the arena, free of charge. All students are welcome. Complimentary pizza will be served.

Free Pizza and Pop After the Men's Basketball Game Feb. 24

This Saturday, Feb. 24, after the men’s basketball game, the Athletic Department will show the movie “Glory Road” on the video board of Rhodes Arena beginning 20 to 30 minutes after the game. Students who attend will receive free pizza and pop, courtesy of the Athletic Department.

Based on a true story, the movie “Glory Road” is about the 1966 NCAA National Basketball Champions, the Miners of Texas Western University better know today as the University of Texas El Paso. It demonstrates the turbulent times of social and political change the team, which was the first collegiate team to start five African American players, experienced during their quest towards a National Championship!

This event is one of several that the Athletic Department has conducted to honor Black History Month.

Filling the Emily Davis Gallery with wondrous illustrations, the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art announces the exhibition: "Jeffrey Fulvimari: Ultramarine Dreams and Other Stories", Feb. 26 - March 26, 2007. Jeffrey Fulvimari is a prolific illustrator, born in Akron, OH, whose work is especially popular in Japan and is well-known internationally. Fulvimari will be on campus for the opening reception Thursday, March 1, from 6 – 7:30 pm, where he will present a gallery talk about his work. His illustrations can be spotted virtually everywhere, including animation for cable television networks and commercials, all aspects of print media, and numerous popular and licensed product lines in the US, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the UK, and other territories. His corporate client list includes Vogue, Gap, Nieman Marcus, Harper's Bazaar, Chanel, Verve Records, Sony Music and many more. Fulvimari's artistic diversity has led to a wide variety of projects including a Grammy Award for CD packaging, collaborative work with Madonna on a children's book, and fashion design for Louis Vuitton.

In recognizing women's history month in March, a presentation "The Veiled Women of Iran," by Dr. Debra Johanyak will from noon to 1:15 p.m., Thursday, March 1, in the UA Wayne College Community Room.

Dr. Debra Johanyak is the author of Behind the Veil: An American Woman's Memoir of the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis (November 2006). Professor of English at The University of Akron Wayne College. Debra who has dual U.S.-Iran citizenship, spent part of her graduate studies in Iran during the 1979-80 American embassy takeover in Tehran. Her talk will focus on the role of veiling of Iranian women's identities.

The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration presents A Dream Play, by August Strindberg, March 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10 at 8 p.m. and March 4 at 2 p.m. at Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, 157 University Ave., on campus. This production’s mature language may not be suitable for younger audiences.

In this new version by director James Slowiak, A Dream Play follows the experiences of Agnes, daughter of the Hindu god Indra, as she is sent to Earth to lead the life of a human. Agnes’ mission is to discover whether or not human complaints are well-founded. In seeking the answer to this question, she encounters many of the sufferings of human existence, from poverty and starvation to unhappy marriage and the all-consuming struggle of childrearing.

In order to enrich your theatre experience, post-performance ‘talk-back’ sessions will be provided after every performance. A Study Guide for this production has been posted on the Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration Web site . In addition, seminars regarding the influence of dreams on various subjects will be conducted by UA faculty members prior to the start of each performance. Attention all Greek and Residence Hall Students:

The Student Union Game Room is hosting an amateur 8-ball billiards tournament on Saturday, March 3. Doors open at noon, and play begins at 1p.m.. The cost is only $10 per team for teams of two. Trophies will be given out to the winners; however there is a grand prize for the residence hall or chapter that brings out the most people, shows the most support, and has a lot of creativity in doing so. This respective chapter or residence hall will win a free night of billiards in the game room! Judging will be based on team uniforms, number of teams participating, number of supporters, and team creativity.

Please register at the Information Center on the 2nd floor of the Student Union. This year’s theme is Beach “Pool” Party, so dress to impress.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Philip Thomson will perform Franz Liszt’s “Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses” on Sunday, March 4, at 3 p.m., in Guzzetta Recital Hall, 157 University Ave., across from E.J. Thomas Hall.

Canadian-born Thomson is acclaimed for his discovery, world premiere performance, and recording of Franz Liszt’s previously unknown “De Profundis.” Thomson, whose recordings of Liszt have been lauded in major musical journals around the world, leads the piano program at UA's School of Music.

Tickets may be purchased at the door. Prices are $10 for general admission; $8 for seniors, UA faculty, staff, alumni, and parents of current UA students; and $3 for non-UA students. Admission is free for UA students when they show their Zip Card. Parking is free.
