Dinner-dance raised $5,100 for student trip to Mississippi
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Faculty, staff and students raised more than $5,100 at the second-annual Hearts for Humanity Dinner-dance on Feb. 9 — more than triple the proceeds of the 2006 event. The money will help offset transportation costs for the 60 students who will travel to Pass Christian, Miss., over spring break to assist with hurricane relief efforts.

Event organizers extend their gratitude to all who attended; to Dining Services for the exceptional food and service; to Joe Augustine, Tim Powell and Mark Gonder from the School of Music for their terrific entertainment; and to Scott Horstman Photography for donating his time and talent.

Did you return a book a little late? Forgot what time your laptop was due? Your chance to pay off those charges and help a good cause is here! Throughout the month of March, the University Libraries and the Law Library will be sponsoring their annual Food for Fines drive for the Akron-Canton Food Bank.

You can bring in non-perishable food items to pay for your fines. One food item equals one dollar towards your fines and there is no limit on the number of items you may bring in. This offer cannot be used to pay for billed or lost books.

The food goes to the Akron-Canton Food Bank for their Harvest for Hunger Campaign.

Food may be dropped off at the Bierce Library Circulation desk, Audio Visual Services, Science & Technology Library or the Law Library.

Since 2004 the University Libraries has collected over 16,000 pounds of food to benefit the Food Bank.

Dear Students,

When the USA Today and the Akron Beacon Journal pilot readership program ends we will leave a survey in its place for students to tell us what they think of all the papers and which one they prefer. If you would like to provide any feedback prior to or after the survey please e-mail asg@uakron.edu ,

Pick up your copy of the New York Times, USA Today and the Akron Beacon Journal today in the Student Union, Bierce Library, and the Buckingham Building (connected to the CBA near the concourse) and enjoy reading your free papers.

Acoustic Guitar Magazine notes that “It’s a good sign when the first three songs of a record have you wondering ‘why haven’t I heard of her before?’ Such is the case with Megan Slankard’s debut album, Freaky Little Story. Her vocal style is so distinctive that simply naming influences (Ani DiFranco, Alanis Morissette) doesn’t do it justice.” The magazine goes on to say that “…her vocal melodies are immediately arresting, she uses hip-hop phrasing and whisper-to-roar dynamics like a pro, and she never lets her impeccable technique eclipse the emotion she pours into her performances.” Megan also appeared on the Learning Channel’s What Not to Wear in July 2004, which generated a flurry of CD sales that placed her in the top ten of both CD Baby and Amazon.com charts for several months. Because of the episode’s popularity (the shows highest rated episode!), its producers are featuring her in a future follow-up program.

Evening of Spanish Conversation March 7

Come to 311 Crouse Hall (note new location!) on Wednesday, March 7, and join us for informal conversation in Spanish. Professor Laura Lenardon will give us a presentation of mate, a traditional hot beverage from South America. We will have examples of the typical gourd-type cups in which mate is prepared and served.

A short video based on an establishment that is famous for processing the plant and making mate will be shown. And no presentation of mate would be complete without an opportunity to sample it.

This event is open to anyone in the campus community, from beginners to native speakers. You may stop in and chat any time from 6 to 8 p.m. and try a taste of this drink that is popular in Argentina and neighboring countries.
