The University of Akron Police Department reminds everyone who uses the locker room at the Rec Center to lock your lockers. The department reports 10 incidents in the last month in which property was taken from lockers; in every case, the lockers were unsecured. If you use the locker room, please remember:

  • Use a lock. If you do not have one, purchase one at the front desk at the Rec Center.
  • If you notice someone going through the lockers, please inform a Rec Center employee.

The Rec Center and police department are working together to recover the missing property and to prevent further incidents.

Meg Allison is a born storyteller and performer. Living in her hometown of Chicago, she is paying her dues as an emerging acoustic artist, always busy touring and honing her craft. Meg writes the melodies that stick, with the lyrics you’ve lived. Her songs are not only inspired by her life, but by the artists she most admires such as Martin Sexton, Patty Griffin, Ryan Adams, and Ray LaMontagne. Now with the release of her debut album, Missing Piece, it appears that Meg is finally being discovered. This album has been earning critical praise and her song “Old Soul” recently won Songwriters Universe Best Song competition. Recently, Meg was featured on this season’s "Nashville Star!"

William Williams-Photographer: African American Soldiers and the Civil War, Lecture and Exhibition April 4
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
"A Song for Unsung Heroes: African American Soldiers in the Civil War" will be on display at the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art’s Emily Davis Gallery from April 2-25, 2007. The exhibition of 60 photographs is the culmination of a decade of work by photographer William Earle Williams. The collection is at its second stop of a three year tour. Williams will be on campus to lecture on his work as part of the Bidwell Visiting Artist Lecture series on Wednesday, April 4 at 6 pm in the auditorium of Folk Hall (150 E. Exchange St.). An opening reception for the exhibition will follow, from 7:30-9 pm. All events are free and open to the public.

With "Unsung Heroes", Williams seeks to bring recognition to the contribution of African American troops to the Union victory. African American soldiers, who were over 180,000 strong, have been considerably underrepresented in the documentation of the Civil War. As Williams noted while creating the series "Gettysburg: A Journey in Time " (1986), the stories of the sites that serve as relevant landmarks in the story of minority soldiers were given little to no mention in historical documentation. The combination of these realities served as the motivation for Unsung Heroes, as he asked himself, “Are these sites not as equally important to our country’s history?” Williams’ responded by creating a pictorial documentation of these notable landmarks and a historical record of a forgotten national memory.

Williams was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003-2004, during which much of Unsung Heroes was created. His work has been exhibited in many major institutions, such as the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Smithsonian, and his photographs can be found in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The gallery is open Mon-Sat. from 10 am – 5 pm, Wed./Thurs. from 10 am – 9 pm. For more information on the exhibition, visit www.uakron.edu/art, call 330-972-5951, or contact dwatt@uakron.edu.

Jack Kahl, former owner and CEO of Manco, Inc., will be the featured speaker at the fifth annual Donald L. Kaufman Business Speaker Series. Held at The University of Akron Student Union on Thursday, April 19, 2007 from 2-3 pm. The speech is free and open to the public.

Kahl fought his way out of the projects by becoming a successful entrepreneur. He created DuckŪ Tape and used servant leadership and a caring culture to grow his company Manco, Inc from a small distributor into a leading global consumer products company. He bought Manco with $10,000 cash and an $182,000 loan in 1971, and sold the business to the Henkel Group nearly three decades later with sale of $180 million.

Under Kahl’s leadership, Manco was the first company to receive three Wal-Mart “Vendor of the Year” awards and OfficeMax’s “Vender of the Year” award.

The Kaufman Business Speaker Series, now in its fifth year, was founded by The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration through a gift from Donald L. Kaufman, retired president and CEO of Alside Inc. This year’s lecture is also sponsored by the only student entrepreneurship organization at the University of Akron, Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies.

Mr. Kahl was a former chairman of SIFE, which is an organization that reaches 800,000 college students. An organization that gives students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation. Jack Kahl is the former chairman of the organization.
