AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer opportunity with OCC and UA April 13 - May 1
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national-service program in which volunteers live in the communities they serve, designing programs that will continue after they complete their service. Created in 1965, VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) was designed to meet the needs of underserved communities and to address and combat poverty. In 1993, AmeriCorps was created and merged with the existing VISTA program. The Corporation for National and Community Service, also created in 1993, has oversight for all AmeriCorps*VISTA programs.

The Ohio Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA program was created in 1998 with six VISTAs focusing on literacy. In 2004 the program grew to 22 VISTAs on 20 member campuses assisting their colleges and universities to enhance and expand the civic engagement of students and faculty in their respective communities.

The goals of OCC's VISTA Program are to:
Integrate service into faculty instruction and students’ studies, making community service and service-learning a valued element of the undergraduate experience.
Enhance students’ responsibility, citizenship, and awareness of the community while reinvigorating higher education’s concern for improving the quality of life in society.
Strengthen the impact of that service on the welfare of communities and the education of students in institutions of higher education.

If interested in Service Learning and an excellent Volunteer Opportunity for the 2007-2008 year to help yourself, community, and University

The University of Akron Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) along is participating in the Change for Charity fundraising drive. Our SAAC committee will be donating earnings to the UPA (University Park Alliance) and a special fund set up at Bluffton University.

The mission of the University Park Alliance (UPA) is to revitalize the diverse neighborhoods in a 40-block area immediately surrounding the University of Akron, through engaging the community and catalyzing real estate & business investment. Bluffton University has set up a special fund that will aide in supporting the families of the student-athletes who lost their lives or were injured in the charter bus accident carrying the school's baseball team on an expressway in Atlanta.

You will see "Fear the Roo" change jars around campus and we ask you for any spare change you have to be donated on this behalf.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact SAAC Advisor David Rubens at 330-972-6314 or by drubens@uakron.edu or contact SAAC President deannamc9@aol.com .

Five Times August April 17

“How do you sell your CD to three million people?” is the latest question on 22-year-old Brad Skistimas’s mind. The singer/songwriter fronts the music project Five Times August, an idea he started in 2001 at 18. In five years he’s turned Five Times August into a popular independent music act for today’s college market, selling more than 10,000 CDs across the United States. The latest album, Fry Street, features five tunes used on MTV’s Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. With three million viewers tuning into the show every Monday night, Skistimas’s newest goal is to reach as many of those people as possible. As he tops the charts worldwide on Myspace.com (number three unsigned pop/acoustic artist worldwide), Awarestore.com, and iSound.com, it’s clear that word is spreading about Five Times August. Free.

Its been a fun semester singing around campus and in the community. Not to mention the morning we got to perform on Fox 8 for Valentine's Day.
We've been getting geared up for our Concert coming up on Friday, May 4 at 8 pm, and we'd love it if you'd come check it out. This semester's concert will be in the Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall. If you aren't sure where that's at, its the building across from Beirce and right next to the JAR.
We'll be starting to put flyers out, messages on facebook, and myspace, as well as more updates on Zipline up until the concert, but if you have any other questions check out our Website . So when May 4 comes along, we better see you at the Daum for our concert. Attendance is mandatory.
